I am pretty burnt out on this task, so I leave it to y'all to hash out how you would do Winter sports, Get to 20, and/or De-orphan December. Religion and 2024 need text. We need a Tip of the month and any announcements. There shouldn't be coding issues at this point. Just look at a relevant page and work it out. It wouldn't be a template that needs editing, it would be putting info into the page correctly. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 02:03, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @WomenArtistUpdates for getting us started for December. I will draft W324 Women who died in 2024. I have just this week created the WiR Redlist for Deaths 2024, which I have just added to the Redlist page. Oronsay (talk) 02:59, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @WomenArtistUpdates for getting us started. Perhaps we can agree someone else to get things started next month/year. Between Religion and the deaths in 2024 and the push for 20% I think there is a danger of spreading ourselves too thin if we also add in the De-orphan december. I wonder is @Lajmmoore might agree that this could actually be a tip? I like that you've highlighted how doing some de-orphaning can also help identifying new biographies to cover which then contributes to the push for 20%. TheResilientEngineer (talk) 08:45, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TheResilientEngineer: To be honest, judging by how close we're getting, I'm not sure we'll end up needing a dedicated "Get to 20" event. Maybe a notice on each of the monthly events (and maybe on the Project front page) encouraging people to help us get over the line will be enough? --Grnrchst (talk) 10:06, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We at the other WiR would be happy to help. This weekend, many of our members are presenting an editathon at a religious conference in San Diego, but I'll let them know. Personally, I like the longer alt title, since it's how we describe things. Please direct users to our project page. Our next editing session is December 9 at 10 pm UTC; here is the link: https://tulane.zoom.us/j/95434400202?pwd=N0lEQzFFTHZNRXk0NE44M3RxUWtkUT09#success. Thanks and best, Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 17:31, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind De-Orphaning not being a theme - maybe next year? I think the overlinking tip is a good one. Lajmmoore (talk) 09:51, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • As no one seemed interested in developing #325, I've finally had a go at it myself although I am not at all comfortable about editing in the new automated environment. I would have liked to change the title to simply Religion as all our articles are about women but can't see the title on the project page. In the old days we were also able to introduce images but I can no longer see where these should be. So perhaps others such as WomenArtistUpdates will be able to assist. I also hope Figureskatingfan, Dzingle1 and other participants in WP Women in Religion will enhance the section on redlinks and perhaps comment in the introduction on the report they presented at Wikimedia. Fortunaa might like to add something on the June presentation at the American Academy of Religion. Any other pertinent background would of course be useful. With apologies for lack of competence: --Ipigott (talk) 16:20, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be so honored, but the true genius behind the AAR presentations is RosPost. She arranged them, and invited me in, along with others from Women in Religion. Clifford Anderson in our group also arranged one at Yale, where he works. That said, I'm always happy to comment once the two of them are in the conversation! • Religion
    • To be more inclusive, would we want to consider referring to it as Religious, spiritual, and wisdom traditions (a descriptor used by Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Religion)? However, this is quite long. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:06, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Get to 20

    edit

According to my projections of the increasing numbers of women's biographies, the number of women's biographies should be hitting 20% of all biographies by the end of the year. I wondered if it would perhaps be worth doing an end-of-year edit-a-thon to help us nudge it over the line. Unlike the usual themed characters of our monthly edit-a-thons, this one could be more of a free-for-all to encourage as much creation as possible. Just an idea. --Grnrchst (talk) 08:14, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    De-orphan December

    edit

Adding a suggestion here for a deorphaning theme: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Women_in_Red#de-orphaning_as_monthly_initiative? However, looking I wonder if December might be a bit full with other themes? Lajmmoore (talk) 06:23, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I did quite a lot of deorphaning in August-September and think that making it one of several themes is a good idea. There is little point in several people trying to deorphan the same article and finding it has already been done. We should encourage volunteers to add links which improve the articles edited, rather than to deorphan articles at any cost. Deorphaning is also a good opportunity to see whether the article can be improved in other ways. TSventon (talk) 16:54, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Coordination

    edit

With WomensArtistsUpdates (deliberately not tagged) taking a (hugely deserved) break from lassooing us every month, I thought we should work out how we're going to proceed in 2025 - Oronsay, Ipigott, Rosiestep, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle, SusunW, Chocmilk03, Penny Richards, Silver seren, PamD, Curbon7, MSGJ, TheResilientEngineer, Grnrchst, TSventon. I can't do much more until the second half of the year, but I wondered how people might feel about volunteering to start things off in the middle of month, say taking a month each? Lajmmoore (talk) 22:20, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for alerting me but I am still having difficulty with the new automated environment. I realize it was intended to make things easier but yesterday I spent almost an hour looking into recent events but was unable to cope with simple issues like changing a title or adding a photo. For people of my age (in their eighties), after contributing for years and years in one environment, it is not easy to adapt to new procedures despite the step-by-step instructions. I am, of course, always happy to provide assistance once an event has been added and fully support the proposal to relieve WAU of this burdensome task. Thank you, Lajmmoore, for taking the initiative. I also wondered whether we could call upon the assistance of Megalibrarygirl and Espresso Addict, not only to work on the month-to-month setups but also to help with mass-messaging.--Ipigott (talk) 08:48, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think I need to spend some more time learning. I can take the STEM month though as that's later in the year. I didn't see this before I started off the firming up list for jan below. Not sure I can get much further as the some templates need changing for 2025 and I haven't been able to work out how to do this. TheResilientEngineer (talk) 08:37, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I will have a go at setting up for Jan, as I did a month shortly after the templates were set up. I'll call on template maker MSGJ if it gets tricky.--Oronsay (talk) 18:31, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Yep, I'm here to help if needed — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:55, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there, MSGJ. It's good to hear you are ready to help. I was wondering if you could improve the interfaces so that we are not faced with time-consuming tasks such as changing the title of an event, adding a photo or editing some of the pre-determined additions to the RH margin. It would be great if we could have an editable draft of the entire event as we used to have in the past. If such improvements could be made, I would certainly be willing to participate far more actively.--Ipigott (talk) 18:07, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    • As per this discussion, perhaps a focus on women who are well represented in languages that aren't English, using this list. Might need a catchier title though? Lajmmoore (talk) 17:26, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Lajmmoore: I actually already proposed an "Interwiki edit-a-thon" along these lines (see below). --Grnrchst (talk) 10:26, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
When I sort one of our geofocus redlists on the "number of links" column, a depressing number of the top ranking are usually porn stars. Do we want to focus our editors' minds on them? I'm showing my biases here, but I can't help but think there are more worthwhile contributions we could make to en.wiki. But as long as we remind our editors to skim through the highly-linked lists looking for someone who seems a real gap in en.wiki, it could be useful. PamD 18:40, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PamD: I understand the hesitation, it's something I find a bit jarring about some of the geofocused redlists as well. But there are redlists for different occupations, which by their nature would preclude these kinds of article. For example, the woman with the most interwiki links on the revolutionaries list has 8 interwiki links; there's also 10 interwiki links for the most inter-linked in economists, 6 for judges, etc. --Grnrchst (talk) 10:33, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    #PendingDrafts

    edit

As per Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red#Women-related articles at AfC, suggesting that we begin a never-ending event (along the lines of #1day1woman) focused on women-related AfC articles. This will take some set-up work, but the idea is that methodical awareness of these articles and collaborative assistance with improving them will increase the possibility that the draft will make it to mainpage, and that the newbie editor will come to know they aren't alone. --Rosiestep (talk) 08:34, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Revolutionary women

    edit

Hey all. For quite a while now I've been working on articles about revolutionary women (i.e. women who either participated in revolutions or were involved in revolutionary movements/organisations). Most of my submissions have been to other themed events, but I was thinking it might be fun to do a specific edit-a-thon focused on revolutionary women. I can try putting together a red list for it, perhaps we could do it some time next year? --Grnrchst (talk) 14:39, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Grnrchst I think this should go on the agenda next year. April 2025 does not have a theme attributed. Perhaps we add it to the list? When we get round to March it would be great if you can help create the event page, would you be happy to do that? TheResilientEngineer (talk) 08:48, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Interwiki edit-a-thon

    edit

I was just fiddling around with the number of links redlist, as I noticed it hadn't updated in over a year, and managed to get it back to working order. It got me thinking whether we should have an edit-a-thon focused specifically on creating articles with a high number of interwiki links; the redlist includes articles with 7 or more interwiki links. This could be a nice way to focus on the higher importance (for lack of a better term) articles that other language wikis have recognised as worthy of articles. --Grnrchst (talk) 09:46, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    • distribute the thank you and/or barnstar after the event to the contributors
    • create Wikidata entry if none exists

Checklist for updates of virtual meetups

    edit

This section is purely administrative. It is not about the ongoing discussions of topics.

WiR generally has a variety of monthly, quarterly and annual events. WiR also sends out an “invitation” to its registered participants notifying them of those events. This is an effort to list tasks associated with the administrative tasks of updating and adding pages. We will be maintaining this list to assist with Quality Assurance. This is a working document and should be maintained to reflect current bast practices. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:52, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

As of March 2024 we are working with a new set of cascading templates. Because the template speak to each other the preview of the template might not be as expected. For example 302 might look like 304. Additionally some pages won't preview correctly unless the editor purges the page to update the cache.

The interrelated templates allow us to make changes and pages once, without updating new and past events throughout the WiR ecosystem. This will ultimately reduce mistakes, bad directs, and misinformation. The coders involved are watching these pages to ensure they work correctly. March 2024 is the first iteration. If direction are not clear it is the drafter's fault - not the coders, so please be gentle.
