editEtymology
editBorrowed from Late Latin cepulla. The change in the initial consonant suggests that the term was borrowed when Latin /k/ had palatalized to [kʲ], and that Basque speakers, lacking that sound, interpreted it as /t/ (or as /k/, hence the dialectal form kipula).[1] Compare Spanish cebolla, Italian cipolla.
