[edit]Most of the article is unreferenced, so I can't even consider it close to GA worthy yet until the rest of the article is referenced. Plus, the refs need to contain accessdates, publishers, titles, etc. Wizardman 20:56, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
- I have made substantial improvements to the referencing since the last nomination and look forward to a constructive review on the merits of the article. KuyaBriBriTalk 14:26, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
Why on earth are we showing a photo of Randy Johnson in a Yankees uniform??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:4898:80E0:EE43:0:0:0:4 (talk) 21:55, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Langston's "errant cutoff throw"
[edit]I was at the game. I don't recall Langston making the errant cutoff throw, but what I do recall, like it happened yesterday, is Langston sitting on his butt at home plate after missing the tag on Sojo. I was reminded of it when Peyton Manning assumed the identical position in Super Bowl XLIV after Tracy Porter picked him off.
Also, is there an audio link anywhere online for M's announcer Rick Rizzs' now-classic call of the play (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Seattle_Mariners):
“Here's the pitch. Swing, and it's a ground ball, and it gets on by Snow. Down the right field line into the bullpen. Here comes Blowers. Here comes Tino. Here comes Joey. The throw to the plate is cut off. The relay by Langston gets by Allanson. Cora scores! Here comes Sojo...he scores! Everybody scores! Sojo comes in!" - Rick Rizzs —Preceding unsigned comment added by BigshirtXL (talk • contribs) 18:31, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- I wasn't at the game nor have I seen a video clip of this play in quite a while. When I wrote the summary, I relied heavily on written recaps of the game, particularly this one. Here's how I understand that play transpired:
- Sojo hits the ball down the right field line. The ball glances off 1B J. T. Snow's glove and past him.
- The ball then rolls under the Angels' bullpen bench. Someone, I'm assuming RF Tim Salmon, recovers it and throws it back into the infield.
- Langston cuts off the throw and throws it home to C Andy Allanson in an attempt to throw Joey Cora out. The ball gets by Allanson and Cora scores.
- Allanson goes to recover the ball and throws it back to Langston, who is covering home, to put Sojo out. Langston misses the tag and that's how he ended up on the seat of his pants.
- Now that I think about it, "errant cutoff throw" implies that Langston was attempting to hit the cutoff man when in reality Langston was the cutoff man. According to the official scoring, a throwing error was charged to Langston (rightfully so), and Sojo was the only unearned run on the play (perhaps Cora should have been unearned too but again, I haven't seen the video of the play in a while). I'll go ahead and change "errant cutoff throw" to simply "throwing error." —KuyaBriBriTalk 19:26, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
