Bibliography

[edit]

Christian wrote the auto-biographical book "Reds in The Dump." In which he describes his childhood growing up in the Old Dump area and supporting Manchester City.

I don't know how to do a citation but as regards where he grew up Christian mentioned Moss Lane West on the TV programme Room 101 sometime in the mid 1990s. Anyone who knows the area will tell you that this is at Brooks('s) Bar, a crossroads that more or less divides the areas of Old Trafford, Moss Side, Whalley Range and Hulme. Morrisey grew up a few streets away and further up the road on Moss Lane East, and in a previous age, lived the young Anthony Burgess. Currently a in the Writing section Terry is said to have written a book called "Reds in the Hood". One of the titles could be wrong, the book could have been retitled or they are two separate books "Reds in the Hood" and "Reds in the Dump"? Jonpatterns (talk) 15:06, 5 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Century FM

[edit]

Any info on Terry's stint at Century FM? I used to listen to him in the late 90's. His slot was something like 7pm - 9pm, Mon-Thu, and Clint Boon did Sunday's, I think. Played some really good music a la his days and Picadilly. Towards the end you could see some obligatory mainstream music creeping in, until, inevitably, Terry and Clint were replaced by some zombie radio presenters from the Century FM clone factory. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.8.250.47 (talk) 12:18, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Place of birth

[edit]

IP editor User:94.168.21.175 has decided that Terry Christian's place of birth should be shown as Lancashire, not Greater Manchester, because that was the relevant county at the time of his birth. I think that is potentially confusing and complicated, and that we should refer to places where they are classified today (apart from discussing history, of course). Thoughts? Is there a policy anywhere? -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 15:00, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think an encyclopaedia shouldn't "re-write" history, which in this case, stating a person is born in a county prior to the county existing is simply untrue. Yes, it is complicated and potentially confusing, but take that up with the report that initiated county alterations - inferring that history is never straightforward. However, most places (when clicked on) have X was in and now is in stated in the first or second paragraphs. At a glance at many people born in the British Isles, it would be easier to reinforce the truth of stating the county, which existed at the time of a person's birth. Would it be right to suggest Thomas Beecham or Fred Dibnah were born in Merseyside or Greater Manchester, for instance? Would it be right to say Nebuchadrezzar I was king of Babylon, which it then was, and not Iraq, which it is now? An index of metals (talk) 15:13, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think there's a big difference between "Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon" and the location of a place - Nebuchadnezzar was king of the political entity that was Babylon, and was never king of the political entity known as Iraq - had Terry Christian been king of Lancashire, I agree that might be different. When describing locations, it would seem to me to be more useful to describe where they are now, as that will be most readily identifiable to most people (eg, someone looking up Thomas Beecham's birthplace on a mapping site would be more likely to find using its modern location), although I do agree that the decision is not necessarily straightforwad - and as I implied, where there is historical significance, that should also be included. However, I will obviously be happy to go with consensus, and was really hoping someone would know of some policy, or at least some precedent, to help us. -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 15:23, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Though I think in principle it would be a disservice to accuracy to suggest certain regional entities existed when at the time they did not. If you were to use present text of being from somewhere, then obviously that would be different. Maybe the King of Lancashire has a policy on this sort of matter. ;) 94.168.21.175 (talk) 15:31, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • (After long and tricky network outage) Our current guideline is here, which suggests we use the current county and if necessary add wording such as "then in ....". I don't see a problem with consensus arising on a per-article basis to avoid setting a project-wide precedent. Rodhullandemu 19:35, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The guideline doesn't refer to a specific case of an individual's county of birth. Are you thoroughly certain, for example, a figure born in the 1600s could be stated to have been born in Merseyside? Philip Larkin is an interesting example on both birth and death. 94.168.21.175 (talk) 19:53, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If this is in fact a consensus discussion, then I favour stating the county name at the time of his birth; following WP:UCC strictly makes things look a bit awkward, and the Philip Larkin example above is a perfect example. If someone is curious about the county, they'll click the link. Radiopathy •talk• 01:43, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Controversy

[edit]

There ought to be a 'Controversy' section for the sake of balance if this ia a biographic article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Middle More Rider (talkcontribs) 15:45, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have any specific 'controversy' you wish to insert? Per WP:BLP, critical information about living people can't be included without reliable sources. Robofish (talk) 17:15, 2 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

IP user claiming to be Subject

[edit]

We have policies regarding this. Please read WP:COI. Bottom line is that for a BLP (Biography of a Living Person) the subject of the article should be unbelieveably careful and normally propose any, um, proposed changes to the article here on this page. If you are Terry, and we have no idea if you are, you really shouldn't edit the article directly. We also need to cite reliable sources WP:RS to base our article on. -Roxy the sometimes happy dog. wooF 14:19, 4 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • I am unsure if Terry (or the person claiming to be Terry) will see this, seeing their preference on using email as a method of contact. What would be the best way of redirecting said person here, so they can both see this discussion then take appropriate action (i.e. not continuing to edit an article of yourself)? snood1205(Say Hi! Regarding the mother's occupation, Independent contains an article written by the subject clearly stating My mother was a school dinner lady, so it seems reasonable enough to remove the seamstress part, especially considering the IP says that was her occuptation years before he was born.
