County Seat

[edit]

Based on Nassau County Executive and Nassau County Legislature, the address for the county seat is 1550 Franklin Ave. Mineola, NY 11501. However, that address appears to be in the village of Garden City, according to USGS via ACME mapper and NYS GIS Clearinghouse (sorry, no direct link available for the second one). With these sources, is it safe to change the county seat to Garden City? --JBC3 (talk) 04:35, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Note: I just found another site, which lists Mineola as the county seat,NACo. Nassau is a NACo member, so it would seem Mineola is right... now I'm so confused... --JBC3 (talk) 04:38, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, some of the county buildings are in the Village of Garden City (Newsday article), yet Nassau County still claims the county seat is Mineola, which it is always listed as in documents, almanacs, etc. I don't think there's much one can do except make a note in the article that some of the buildings are outside the Village of Mineola limits. --Zimbabweed (talk) 09:00, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with this conclusion; unless I'm quite confused, the county determines its county seat, so whatever the county says is by definition correct. Even if New York does it differently, there has to be some official designation; does New York designate county seats by state law, like Vermont does for its shire towns?
