[edit]Attested since circa 1750. From Proto-Germanic *lapjaną (“to lick; lap”) (compare Middle English lappen, Old High German laffen, French lamper). Compare with lamber (“to lick”), which derives of Latin lambere (“lick”), or Sicilian allappari~allippari.
