[edit]Inherited from Late Latin osma (in glosses) (or through a Vulgar Latin form *orma), from Ancient Greek ὀδμή (odmḗ, “odour, stench”). Compare Logudorian Sardinian orma, ormina, Romanian urmă, Aromanian urmã, Istriot urma, Friulian olme, Venetan usma, Neapolitan uoseme, Spanish husmo, Galician osmar, Old French osmer.
