.xyz supports Real Name Verification
Due to local laws in China, Registrars incorporated in China must verify their customers’ contact information during domain registration. This only applies to registrants that are registering domains at a registrar in China. It does not impact registrants, registrars, and domains outside of the country.

What is Real Name Verification (RNV)?
In short, registrants who register domains in China must verify their identity. This is similar to ICANN’s existing WHOIS verification policies, but specific to China.
RNV is a simple step in most Chinese registrars’ checkouts. Just include a copy of your Chinese national ID or passport when prompted, or a copy of business license or organization code certificate.
RNV does not apply to registrants, registrars, and domains outside of China. Learn more about RNV.
Why do I need to verify my name?
Identity verification for domains is nothing new. In fact, all existing domain registrants have verified or are verifying their contact information, since this is already an ICANN policy. RNV is an additional measure taken in China to protect internet users from online crime.
RNV does not apply to registrants, registrars, and domains outside of China. Learn more about RNV.
What information or documents are needed for RNV?
Please note that the below information only needs to be submitted to registrars in China so that your domain can be hosted in China.
If you are a business entity:
- Photocopy of valid business license or organization code certificate
If you are an individual:
- Photocopy of the front of your Chinese national ID card
- If you do not have a Chinese national ID, you can provide a photocopy of the below:
- Front of your temporary resident ID
- Proof of residence with Security Bureau Seal
- Foreign passport, if you do not live in China
RNV does not apply to registrants, registrars, and domains outside of China. Learn more about RNV.
When and where do I need to submit RNV information?
Starting December 16, 2016, registrants with existing domains registered at registrars in China will be asked by their registrar to submit their contact information for RNV.
For all new registrations and transfer-ins at registrars into Chinese registrars, just submit your ID or passport when prompted by the registrar. Although most registrars allow you to submit this during checkout, we recommend contacting your registrar directly if you are unsure about this process.
If you forget to submit your ID during registration, you can still submit everything to your registrar within 5 business days.
RNV does not apply to registrants, registrars, and domains outside of China. Learn more about RNV.
Where can I find the status of my RNV?
All verification is done through the Chinese registrar where you registered your .xyz domains. Since only your registrar has access to this information, we recommend contacting your registrar directly for status updates.
RNV does not apply to registrants, registrars, and domains outside of China.
What will happen if I do not submit the RNV information?
Domains that do not have a verified owner cannot be hosted locally in China. This is a policy by China that is observed by registrars located in the country. If your contact information is not verified within 5 business days of registration, your registrar will place your domain on a temporary hold.
Registrants who do not verify their contact information are still able to own and renew their domains.
RNV does not apply to registrants, registrars, and domains outside of China. Learn more about RNV.
I forgot to submit my ID – when will the hold be lifted from my domain?
After submitting the necessary information to your registrar, it normally takes between 24-48 hours for RNV to be processed. Since verification is performed by your registrar, and not by XYZ, we recommend contacting your registrar directly for status updates.
RNV does not apply to registrants, registrars, and domains outside of China. Learn more about RNV.
My registrar did not perform RNV when I registered my domains. What do I do?
RNV only applies to registrars incorporated in China. If you registered a domain at a registrar outside of China, you do not need to submit your contact information for RNV.
If your registrar is located in China but did not prompt you for your contact information, please contact them directly and submit your ID within 5 days of registration.
Why doesn’t my registrar request verification for my domains in another extension?
RNV applies to all domain extensions that are accredited in China – meaning website can be hosted locally in China on these domains. Since .xyz was one of the first domain extensions to become accredited, it is possible that you may own domains in other extensions that are not yet accredited. In these cases, you cannot host website on the domains in China, even if your ownership information is verified.
Please also keep in mind that RNV does not apply to registrants, registrars, and domains outside of China. Learn more about RNV.
My question was not answered here. Where can I get more information about RNV?
Since RNV is only performed by registrars in China, we recommend you contact your registrar directly with additional questions or visit the State Council Information Office.
