🌍 Blended Finance for Clean Energy in Africa 🌱 Today, I’m excited to share about a project I’ve been working on with a valued partner Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) —developing blended finance structures to bring affordable electric cooking solutions to households across Africa. Successfully funding the renewable energy transition requires a thoughtful balance of commercial and patient capital. This combination fuels transformative solutions that enhance access, sustainability, and affordability for underserved communities. As we face the global challenge of climate change, collaborations like these highlight the power of working together to create real and lasting impact. Together, we’re not just funding energy solutions—we’re changing lives. Let’s keep pushing boundaries for a cleaner, more inclusive future! Head of Carbon Strategy

My two weeks at #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, were invigorating and packed full of conversations about carbon markets and clean cooking. Here are some key takeaways: 🏆 9 years after Paris, Article 6.2 and 6.4 are live! Congratulations to the negotiators and everyone who did the patient work to make this happen 🎯 We need to focus on the new NDCs. By February, every country will submit new emission reduction targets for 2030. This is a critical opportunity to think strategically about national priorities and how to fund them. To raise ambition, carbon markets need to be part of the answer 🍳 Clean cooking must be a priority if we are to achieve SDG 7 – universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy – by 2030 👩🍳 But, the scale of the problem is huge. As market leader, BURN has distributed 5 million clean cookstoves since 2013. But with 1 billion people on the continent still cooking with wood & charcoal, that leaves 195 million more households to go 👨💼 Our government partners across Africa are preparing for Article 6, despite limited financial resources and small teams. In the next 6 months, we will see finalised carbon regulations in most of BURN’s markets, and more and more bilateral deals 📰 But, operationalising Article 6 is no joke. The level of reporting and paperwork required from host country governments will take commitment and extensive human resources 👍 Meanwhile, integrity initiatives across the carbon markets are crystalising. In 2025, all the work undertaken in the background will come to fruition with clearer, transparent guidance on what “good” looks like ❓ So, while the supply side is getting ready, we need to see greater demand for high-integrity carbon credits. Now is the moment for the world’s biggest polluters to commit to funding the energy transition, so that no one is left behind 📅 2030 is only 5 years away, so let’s get started! Meanwhile, COP29 was also a chance to take part in discussions on electric cooking, carbon integrity, and the future of carbon markets under Article 6. My thanks to IETA, International Energy Agency (IEA), SNV, Xpotential Mining Services, Global Carbon Council, World Liquid Gas Association, Perspectives Climate Group, and other partners for facilitating these conversations. And finally, thank you to my amazing team mates - especially Caroline Amollo, Tunde Ajisomo and Evelyne Kopar ! #CleanCooking #Article6 #SDG7 #CarbonMarkets #COP29

BURN has received a Letter of Endorsement (LoE) to implement carbon trading projects in Tanzania, allowing us to bring our lifesaving stoves to over 1 million Tanzanian families. At least half of these will be our IoT-enabled ECOA Induction Cookers. The LoE allows us to issue 8.43 million LoA-eligible carbon credits, which will be generated using Gold Standard’s TPDDTEC and MMECD metered methodologies – the world's most rigorous methodologies for biomass and electric cooking. BURN leverages carbon financing to make its clean cooking appliances accessible to households across the continent. Over the past year and a half, we have provided approximately $60 million in discounts through carbon credits, subsidizing the cost of our stoves to households by 60% - 100%. BURN is on track to deliver an additional $110 million in carbon subsidies within the next 18 months. BURN operates an assembly facility in Tanzania that employs 500 people. We have brought clean cooking appliances to ~230,000 Tanzanian households, and plan to distribute 300,000 electric stoves by the end of 2025. Working with Cup Of Uji , BURN has provided stoves to three school kitchens in Kajiado County (Kenya) Isinya Primary, Kumpa Holy Mothers, and Kajiado Township. Our ECOA Pro series is designed for cooking at scale. Institutions can now use BURN stoves available in firewood, briquette, and LPG models and multiple capacities (60, 100, 200, 300, and 400 liters). These stoves reduce wood consumption and carbon emissions while generating Gold Standard carbon credits using methodologies like TPDDTEC and MMCED. BURN aims to improve cooking conditions, save fuel costs and even subsidize food costs for schools across Africa by reinvesting a portion of the carbon credit revenues back to schools.

BURN stoves offer quantifiable economic, environmental, and health benefits! Three years after their first randomized control study, which found that BURN stoves save families $119 per year,  Dr. Susanna Berkouwer and Dr. Joshua Dean revisited the households to measure the long-term impact of the stoves. The follow-up study revealed that BURN stoves not only reduce indoor air pollution that causes respiratory symptoms but contribute substantial economic and environmental benefits. By replacing traditional stoves with our highly efficient models, charcoal consumption is reduced by nearly 39%, which translates to substantial financial savings for families in Kenya. The study also proves that carbon subsidies are essential to incentivize clean cooking adoption among urban low-income earners. Even after 3.5 years, ownership is higher among those who were offered a higher subsidy for the stove than among those who were offered a lower subsidy. Adoption of improved and clean cookstoves remains among the most cost-effective ways to reduce carbon emissions, with each cookstove reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 3.5 tons per year, making the solution affordable, scalable, and highly impactful.  BURN produces a range of digitally - monitored electric cookers, biomass stoves, and LPG stoves that generate high-integrity carbon credits. You can read more about the follow-up study in this Chicago Booth Article (https://lnkd.in/dCHraa4T), and find the full study here https://lnkd.in/dD9yj7ag
