How to cultivate extreme ownership: Remove the safety net. Unlike many other technology companies, at Bending Spoons we keep on-call systems to a bare minimum across all of our products and technologies. Why? To empower our engineers to do their best work. CTO Francesco Mancone explains what’s behind our unorthodox approach: ”As a software engineer, it’s rare to work without the fallback of on-call rotations. Doing away with on-call rotations empowers our engineers to take true ownership of their work and fosters a mindset of radical responsibility: Have I thought about the corner cases? Is this project as sharply engineered as possible? Have I made sure it’s as robust as it can be? The result: Normally a much higher caliber of work, which our engineers can take immense pride in. Occasionally, we’ll establish a temporary on-call program. We do this only when we’re not fully confident in the state of the infrastructure or when potential issues could significantly impact our users. Once we’re confident in the technology’s stability, we dismantle the program. Most recently, we made the decision to phase out our final on-call rotation in Evernote. We introduced this program at Evernote following the acquisition in early 2023. At that time, the software didn’t meet our high standards in order to guarantee that Evernote’s large user base had uninterrupted access to their important content. Now, after nearly two years of significant progress, we’re ready to sunset the program.” *** Have you been part of on-call programs before? We’d love to hear about your own experiences—feel free to share in the comments!

“This feature's my favorite.” Time’s flown since we acquired StreamYard back in May—and the team's been fully focused on strengthening the platform and delivering new features. Product lead Davide Simonetti and platform engineer Lorenzo D'Eri share some of the highlights from the past six months: From Davide: “Every feature and improvement we’ve released since May has been designed with one goal in mind: to make StreamYard ever more intuitive and powerful for our customers. Here are three standout updates that our community is loving (and that I’m appreciating as a new streamer): ♻️ Reusable studios: We tackled solving the time-intensive process of setting up a recording studio for every episode. With Reusable Studios, streamers can recreate their perfect setup again and again with a single click. 🎞️ Automatic intro and outro videos: Streamers told us that juggling intros and outros in a live stream was stressful—and I can confirm! So we made it possible to automatically start video playback at the perfect moment. 🖼️ Scenes: This feature is rolling out soon, but it's already one of my favorites. StreamYard has always supported complex on-screen layouts, but setting them up live can be overwhelming. With Scenes, streamers can now design layouts in advance and breeze through the recording.” And for the tech side, over to Lorenzo: “At StreamYard’s core is real-time audio and video processing. We recently updated the open-source software that powers this essential process to deliver major improvements in performance and stability. This means fewer pain points like audio crackling or freezing during broadcasts, and a much smoother experience overall.” Six months down, and the team’s just getting started. Here’s to all the improvements yet to come! 🚀

For the first time since 2019, users can organize events for free on Meetup. Previously, Meetup only offered paid subscriptions for organizers. This meant that someone new to organizing had to commit financially before even hosting their first event. With this in mind, we sought to create a new experience for first-time organizers: the Meetup Starter plan. 🏁 Meetup’s growth lead Alfredo Riggio explains: “We knew that costs were a barrier for beginners. At the same time, we saw the opportunity to grow the number of communities, groups, and events on the platform, which would attract new members and lead to a more active and engaged community. So, we challenged ourselves to find a sustainable way for first-time organizers to create Meetup groups and events for free. This required a delicate balancing act: • We needed a free option that stood on its own without undermining our paid plans. It took several iterations to find the right mix of features and benefits. • We also needed to keep the caliber of events high. Since removing the financial barrier could affect the quality of groups and events, we tested various requirements and limitations to ensure Starter groups met the same high standards as those from our paying organizers. Now, we’re proud to offer an accessible plan for new organizers—and thrilled by a 35% increase in sign-ups!”
