Poplar is an area of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in East London. It is about 5.5 miles (8.9 km) east of Charing Cross. Poplar gets its name from the black poplar tree, a large and locally rare species.

Mordern Poplar was originally known as the Metropolitan Borough of Poplar in 1900, this included Limehouse, Blackwall and the Isle of Dogs areas. In 1965, it merged with the Metropolitan Boroughs of Stepney and Bethnal Green to form the new London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
