Add or remove someone in a space

To add more people to a space in Google Chat, add them to the member list or mention them directly in the space.

Tips: If you use Chat with a Google Workspace account:

  • You can add a Google Group to the space. Learn how to add a Google Group to a space.
  • Your administrator can create a space that everyone in your organization can find. For example, your administrator can add a group named everyone@yourcompany.com to a space.

Add someone to a space

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. On the left, select the space.
  3. At the top, click the name of the space and then Manage members.
  4. Click Manage members. The current members of that space are displayed.
  5. At the top right, click + Add.
  6. Enter the name or email address of the person or group.
  7. Click Add.

Tips:

  • To quickly add a new person to a space, in the reply area, enter @ followed by the person’s name.
  • To view people that you’ve invited to the space, click Manage members and then Invited.
Learn how space invites work
  • An email invite is sent to someone if:
    • They haven’t had a conversation with you before.
    • They belong to another organization and the space was created by your Google Workspace account.
  • Someone you invite to a space is added directly if:
    • They’ve had a conversation with you before.
    • You're in the same organization.
  • People added directly to spaces don't get email notifications.
  • If you have a Google Workspace account, members of your organization may get an email invite or added directly to a space.

Remove someone from a space

Important: If you have the ability to manage members, you can remove members from a space. After you remove someone, they can't:

  • Participate in the conversation.
  • View that space’s message history.
  • Access shared files in the space.
  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. On the left, select the space.
  3. At the top, click the name of the space and then Manage members.
  4. To the right of the person or group name, click More options and then Remove from space.

Tip: If a person was added as part of a Google Group, remove them from the group first and then from the space.

Copy space member email addresses

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. On the left, select the space.
  3. At the top, click the name of the space and then Manage members.
  4. Click Copy member emails .
