Rampage (ROTF)

From Transformers Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search
The name or term "Rampage" refers to more than one character or idea. For a list of other meanings, see Rampage (disambiguation).
Rampage is a Decepticon Constructicon from the Revenge of the Fallen portion of the live-action film continuity family.

Try yellow, it's the new red.

Rampage (alias Lasher and Whipmaster[1]) is a pretty violent guy. A member of the Constructicons, he can be followed by the trail of destruction as he wrecks his way through the battlefield, leaving the smell of diesel fumes and hot tar in his wake. His chassis is covered with scratches, dings and dents as a testament to his intense love of battle. Thoroughly whacked in the cranial unit, his idea of beauty is a pile of Autobot wreckage.

There are at least two 'bots of the same model that come in red and yellow. Either one of them can form the left leg of Devastator. He used to call himself Skipjack, but renamed himself to avoid confusion with another Constructicon of the same body-type.

I can't feel my legs! Oh, right.

After Ravage retrieved the shard from NEST's secure bunker in Diego Garcia, Rampage was among the Constructicons who secreted themselves aboard the Bayos freighter heading towards the North Atlantic. Once the ship passed over the Laurentian Abyss, Ravage flew onto the ship and accidentally crash-landed on Rampage. Once they reached the specific site, the Decepticons jumped overboard and dove down to where Megatron's broken body lay. When Scalpel examined Megatron's body, he ordered the death of the smallest Constructicon for donor parts, which they obliged. Soon, Megatron was reborn!

I told you not to go there!

During Operation: Firestorm, Rampage was waiting in the Egyptian town to lure Sam Witwicky into a trap by releasing his captive parents, Ron and Judy. Sam was willing to trade the remains of the Matrix for his parents, but when he realized Bumblebee had arrived, the boy managed to position Rampage for an attack. After a long battle (which also resulted in the death of Ravage), Bumblebee finished Rampage by ripping his arms off and over-extending his neck with a powerful kick, killing him. Revenge of the Fallen

Rampage's involvement in the preceding events, or events mostly similar, were also chronicled in the novel The Last Prime; the comic mini-series Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Official Movie Adaptation; and the storybooks "I Am Optimus Prime" and "Rise of the Decepticons".

Toys

As of 2020, Hasbro's stance on the yellow bulldozer forming Devastator's leg appears to have changed; retconing Skipjack in place of Rampage (see: Skipjack (ROTF)#Who is Skipjack?). This would mean that the combining Rampage toys from the Revenge of the Fallen toyline could also be considered Skipjack.

Legends Class

Also known as Rampage "Three Legs" Skipjackson.
  • Decepticon Rampage (EZ Collection DX, 2009)
Part of the Takara "EZ Collection" series, Rampage transforms into a bulldozer similar to a Komatsu D575A. His robot mode is only capable of assuming his "jackhammer" mode, but the treads on the sides of his lower body help keep him upright.
He can also combine with the other six Constructicons (sold separately) to form a tiny little Devastator: Rampage becomes the combined mode's left leg.
This mold was also used to make Bonecrusher for the Japanese-exclusive Generation 1-colored Devastator set.

  • Constructicon Devastator (Legends Class multi-pack, 2010)
In Hasbro's markets, the Legends Class Constructicons were sold together in a 7-pack. They are otherwise identical to the prior Takara releases. In the United States and Canada, said exclusive lies with Walmart. In the United Kingdom, the set was only available through Argos.
This set also included Hightower, Long Haul, Mixmaster, Overload, Scavenger, and Scrapper.

  • Decepticon Rampage Desert Combat (Legends Class multi-pack, 2009)
A red redeco of Rampage was made available as an exclusive to Japanese Toys"R"Us stores in late November. Limited to 4000 pieces, he came as a free gift with the purchase of 3000 yen of TakaraTomy Transformers product.

Deluxe Class

  • Rampage (Deluxe Class, 2009)
  • TakaraTomy ID number: RD-06
  • Known designers: Andrew Scribner (deco artist)
Rampage transforms from a yellow bulldozer similar to a Komatsu D575A into one of two robot mode configurations, the first of which (his actual in-fiction robot form) lacks any functional legs, instead featuring a spring-loaded "jackhammer" assembly. When the figure is bounced along the ground in this mode, his Mech Alive feature is activated, and a pair of pistons that frame his head pump back and forth. If legs are preferred, his jackhammer splits and his elaborate kibble backpack unfolds, together forming four leg-struts to create a free-standing robot form that is rather centaurian in design. Though not mentioned in the instructions or package, the aforementioned backpack can remain folded in robot mode for a more movie-accurate, two-legged 'play' mode of sorts. He features real rubber treads which become arm-mounted whip weapons in robot mode but due to the design, the treads themselves do not function in vehicle mode.
Like several toys in the Revenge of the Fallen toyline, Rampage has had a mold change done somewhere between his instructions being drawn up and the final version of the toy. On the final toy, the rear flap behind the cabin of the bulldozer runs into a screw section used to hold the robot pelvis together. This change also affects where the rear flap and the bulldozer shovel connect in robot mode. On the instructions, this flap is shown as folding flat against the back of the vehicle and said flap is also folded down much farther in robot mode to connect to the shovel. The mold change seems to account for the shovel connection issue in robot mode, but not the problem in vehicle mode. Unlike some others, this change does not directly affect any of the toy's action features or articulation.
Much like several other Revenge of the Fallen toys, Rampage is based on very early concept art, depicting a robot form with a very rectangular "jackhammer" leg (most forms of concept art that came beyond this point had his "jackhammer" leg designed to be more like a curvy "tail", much like the final film's CGI model).

  • Rampage (Deluxe Class, 2010)
  • TakaraTomy name: Decepticon Rampage Desert Combat
  • TakaraTomy ID number: RD-21
As a redeco of Rampage's first deluxe class toy in red, this release of Rampage represents a more movie accurate version of the Rampage who fought Bumblebee in Egypt. Hasbro's version of red Rampage is a straight colour swap, with his yellow plastic replaced with red plastic. As one of the last two figures released in the Revenge of the Fallen deluxe assortment, the red version of Rampage and his casemate Evac were insanely difficult (if not impossible) to find in U.S. retail stores.
TakaraTomy went much further than Hasbro with their version of red Rampage, dubbed "Decepticon Rampage Desert Combat"; Rampage features redecoing on his shovel blade to match the one used on the Rampage prop vehicle seen in the movie (including horizontal lines to match the slatted look of the prop). The figure also features a more screen-accurate red and yellow color scheme, much like his on-screen counterpart.

He joined the Constructicons since Bob the Builder didn't want him.
  • Constructicon Devastator (Supreme Combiner Class, 2009)
Rampage is the yellow Caterpillar D11 bulldozer that transforms into the left leg of Devastator. Like the other Constructicons in this set, he does not have an individual robot mode. He can only form Devastator's left leg, unless you want him to walk backwards. He has the code "AN-KA 111308" imprinted below his Decepticon symbol.

Mega Power Bots

ROTF MegaPowerBots Devastator.jpg
  • Constructicon Devastator (Mega Power Bot, 2009)
Mega Power Bots Devastator is a simple toy for younger children, featuring plenty of playing sounds and flashing lights. His limbs have limited swivel articulation and do not detach into separate vehicles. He has a distinctly more humanoid stature than normal.
Unlike regular Power Bots, and unlike other portrayals of the character in general, Devastator features a transformation! It consists of putting his arms up and laying him flat on his stomach, which lets him roll around using the wheels on his limbs.
Pressing down the Decepticon shield on his crotch (!) spins the vortex in his chest, lights up his eyes and makes him utter one of many Welker-recorded phrases, including "Prepare for extermination!", "Crush Autobots!" and "I am Devastator!" Pressing on the crane of his excavator arm makes a cannon blast sound effect, while pressing the cab of his loader arm turns the scoop into claws.

  • Rampage (Legends Class, 2010)
This Legends Class Rampage is different from Revenge of the Fallen Legends Class Rampage. Because he is not encumbered with the need to combine, both his robot and vehicle modes are much more accurate and detailed. His "jackhammer" mode can be achieved by connecting his legs together and flipping his cab-feet down as the tip (as per the stock photos), although he will not be able to stand up well. Meanwhile, his instructions depict a more stable biped configuration, with his legs spread out and his cab-feet folded back in their vehicle mode position as his heels.
This mold was redecoed into Skipjack.

You mean I'm neither yellow nor red? Well, that's a shock.
  • Constructicon Devastator (Legends Class multi-pack, 2010)
A Toys"R"Us-exclusive Generation 1-themed redeco of Legends Devastator and his components. Unlike TakaraTomy's go at the same idea, Rampage and the other Constructicons are mostly just lime green and gray, with the only bits of purple being their windshields. They do, however, have brown paint operations on and around their wheels to simulate dirt.
He's also still Rampage, whereas TakaraTomy's version is a different character named Bonecrusher.

  • Rampage Among The Ruins (Multi-pack, 2010)
This Toys"R"Us-exclusive multi-pack contains a more screen-accurate red redeco of Deluxe-class Rampage, with a deco similar, but not identical to that of the Japanese Desert Combat Rampage. He is packed with Bumblebee and Ravage, replicating the battle scene that led to the two Decepticons' deaths in Revenge of the Fallen.

TF2010MegsRisingMegsAndConstructs.jpg
  • Megatron Rising (Multi-pack)
This retailer exclusive multi-pack recreates the scene in Revenge of the Fallen where the Constructicons resurrect Megatron. The Rampage figure itself appears to be an unchanged version from the Revenge of the Fallen release of the Legends Constructicon Devastator combiner figure, and comes packed with (apparently) similarly unchanged Constructicon Devastator figures of Long Haul, Mixmaster, a red redeco of Scrapper, and a metallic green redeco of Revenge of the Fallen Voyager Class Megatron.
It has never been revealed for which retailer this multi-pack was intended.

TF-ROTF-Studio-Series-Rampage-misassembled-waist.jpg
Released in time for the tenth anniversary of Revenge of the Fallen, Studio Series "Constructicon Rampage" is accurate to the character's appearance in Revenge of the Fallen, complete with tiny painted warning labels in his armpits. He comes with two blasters, made from the pistons of his vehicle mode, that can be placed inside his hand, and a cardboard backdrop display depicting Operation: Firestorm. Owing to Rampage's unique monopod design, the figure also comes with a small black plastic base to help him stand (or you could try to balance him with the post on the bottom of his jackhammer), which can be stored between his treads in vehicle mode. In combined mode, the stand plugs into Devastator's rump.
Unfortunately, all releases of Rampage suffer from a major misassembly: The joint that connects the upper and lower torsos, featuring a sculpted robot waist and a transmission unit, is flipped compared to the CG stock renders, resulting in the robot waist being present in bulldozer mode and vice-versa. The misassembly does not affect the transformation, though the pinned construction of the joint means it is risky to swap it around.
Rampage can be combined with the other Studio Series Constructicons to form Devastator. Though he was one of the first Constructicons to be released in the line, Hasbro originally intended for Rampage to be displayed alongside Bumblebee, rather than being Devastator's leg. Rampage was later redecoed into Skipjack, who had been the original intent for the combiner, but since both Skipjack and Rampage share the same design it gave fans the option to use Rampage instead if they wanted.
Despite it not being mentioned in the instructions, Rampage's blasters fit very cleanly into the two vertical slots on the bulldozer's blade for storage. This is especially useful in foot mode since it completely frees up the ankle pivot when compared to their default placement. However, as the slots are coated in the same silver paint as the rest of the blade, care should be taken when inserting the guns so as to not chip the paint. It's recommended to place the blasters so their barrels point downward in foot mode for the easiest time with storing them. Bizarrely, the pistons even being blasters isn't touched on by the instructions at all, with them always being shown plugged into the body as the vehicle mode pistons.
Like the majority of the Studio Series Constructicons, he lacks a Decepticon symbol.

  • Landmine VS Rampage (RPM Mini-Vehicle "Battle Series" pack, 2009)
Number six in a series of eight Robot Powered Machines Mini-Vehicle versus packs, "Battle Series" Rampage is packaged with the Autobot Landmine. He's a non-transformable Hot Wheels-like car, with his robot mode sculpted and painted onto his underside. He also features a slightly-articulated shovel, probably for better rolling on tracks. He has through-axle construction similar to the Generation 2 Go-Bots, letting him zip along smooth surfaces (and compatible racetrack sets) at high speed.

Notes

For those of you who thought FIRRIB was too retreaded, here's "RIRSIY"!
  • Although his correct, finalized name is used in the film (in on-screen subtitles, to be precise), Rampage is listed in the credits under his preliminary name of "Skipjack". Much confusion ensued, since nobody had actually heard this preliminary name before. As seen in concept art, during production, Rampage was referred to as "Jumping Jack". TakaraTomy later used the name Skipjack for a yellow redeco of the 2010 Legends class Rampage toy.
    • Hasbro later released a yellow repaint of Rampage in the Studio Series toyline that also went by the name Skipjack as a means to give fans an accurate Devastator. Although it hasn't officially been confirmed that Skipjack was the one who appeared in the film as Devastator's left foot, Hasbro employees who worked on Studio Series Devastator referred to Skipjack as being the yellow bulldozer from the film.[2] As such the toy bios for both Rampage and Skipjack reflected this notion for their involvements in the film. A deeper look into this identity headache can be found on Skipjack's page.
  • While Starscream calls the red bulldozer "Rampage", secondary sources such as early Devastator toys and The Movie Universe refer to the yellow bulldozer who forms Devastator's left leg/foot as "Rampage". But as stated before, new information in 2020 from behind the scenes at Hasbro suggests that they may have retconned the yellow bulldozer's involvements in the film as actually being Skipjack.
  • In the scene where all the Constructicons wait aboard the barge for Ravage and the AllSpark shard to arrive, a red bulldozer representing Rampage is visible in the flyover shot. But in the next scene where Ravage crash-lands into Rampage upon arrival, the bulldozer is suddenly recolored yellow. When the Constructicons transform into robot mode and dive into the water, the bulldozer is colored red again.
    • In short, it is Rampage (rather than Skipjack) who is present during Megatron's resurrection. Trying to distinguish how many Constructicons appeared in Revenge of the Fallen only continues to get harder with each watch.
