Ratchet (SG)
From Transformers Wiki
This article is about the evil Autobot "medic". For his heroic Autobot medic counterpart, see Ratchet (G1). For a list of other meanings, see Ratchet (disambiguation). |
- Ratchet is an evil Autobot "medic" from the Shattered Glass continuity family.
To say Ratchet is the Autobots' medic would be a falsehood. Ratchet is where Optimus Prime sends the wounded from battle, but not for repairs. No, they are sent there for punishment. Any Autobot ordered there has to be dragged kicking and screaming.
It's not that Ratchet wants to terrorize his patients. In fact, he honestly believes that he's doing them a great favor! Who wouldn't want some rusty old equipment replacing their head? That would look so cool! And he really doesn't understand why they get so upset after seeing the result of his loving care. But Ratchet shrugs off their cries of protest and confusion. They'll come around eventually. Some may say his morbid operations as a result of a past trauma, that his methods are an attempt to prove something, but no one can quite say for sure.

Mirage, a down-and-out bank robber volunteered for one of Ratchet's "upgrades" so he could gain permanent partial transparency. That was likely the last time anyone paid attention to Mirage. Around Cybertron #7
After a harrowing Dinobot Hunt, Rodimus woke up on Ratchet's operating table, having lost a hand in a battle with Grimlock and the Decepticons. Rodimus, in a panic, immediately tried to leave, and objected to Ratchet's offer to add a second vocoder. It was then that Rodimus noticed that his hand had been not repaired, but replaced with a jagged sawblade. Ratchet was momentarily saddened by Rodimus's dissatisfaction with his "upgrade," but his grin of psychotic amusement returned quickly enough.
Blurr was morbidly fascinated with speculating on what was likely to happen to Wheeljack after Prime ordered that Ratchet should oversee Wheeljack's Earth-mode refit. Dungeons & Dinobots
Ratchet was one of the many Autobots who supported Rodimus when he stole the Ark and set out for Earth. While on Earth, the Autobots found themselves beset by Blitzwing's new uncontrollable broadcasting powers overwhelming their emergency channel, Rodimus looked to Ratchet for a solution. The miserable medic perked right up at his abilities being needed, and said all it would take was a micro-laser. When he came up with a sonic jackhammer instead, and, when that was pointed out to him, asked if anyone really needed their personalities, Rodimus dropped the idea. Ratchet was too busy being enthralled by "Zydrate Anatomy" to care overmuch. Blitzwing Bop
Ratchet helped Wheeljack set up a work area when the Autobots captured Sephie Beller, who had augmented herself with Cybertronian tech. As Wheeljack prepared for a vivisection, Ratchet handed him medical tools. The operation was suspended by the arrival of the Decepticons, whom the Autobots were able to take captive. Ratchet and Brawn were soon kept busy restraining Swoop from attacking the prisoners. The arrival of R.J. Blackrock in a giant mech delayed any executions. During the ensuing fight, Ratchet knocked Sephie out of the air with his crane boom, and she blindly retaliated by blasting him in the head, causing bits of his helmet to go flying. On seeing their medic was wounded, the Autobots retreated back to the Ark. Transhuman
While working on his Transhuman subjects, Side Burn cautioned them that they didn't want Ratchet working on their upgrades. The Autobot medic had a habit of getting...experimental with his patients. Coalescence
After the mass arrival of positive-universe Transformers, Ratchet enacted a plan to cheat his own mortality. To this end, he stole Crystalline Containment technology from the heroic Autobots and used it to store a copy of his brain patterns, which would activate a new body in the event of his deactivation. Following the Autobots' particularly bad defeat at Decepticon City on Earth at the hands of the Decepticons, Ratchet was among the Autobots who left for Cybertron aboard Sky Lynx. Restoration When their ride announced they would have to lighten their load, Ratchet, being among the most badly wounded of the Autobots, was dumped out of the airlock along with Optimus Prime, Brawn, Prowl, and Inferno. They subsequently found themselves in the presence of Unicron, Familiar Reflections who reformatted them to serve his needs. Ratchet became one of the Autotroopers serving Checkpoint among the Knights of Unicron. After returning to Cybertron, he assisted Nova Prime in overthrowing Rodimus. Out of the One, Many
Ratchet's reformatting triggered the activation of his "backup", whose new body was equipped with combiner technology, but suffered from freezing and rebooting issues thanks to compatibility issues with the extradimensional Crystalline Containment technology. Ever the mad doctor, Ratchet was able to plant viruses in and seize control of the brain functions of those unfortunates he combined with. Customization class SG Ratchet bio

At some unspecified point in time, Ratchet and a team of Autobots somehow under the command of both Rodimus Prime and Optimus Prime fought Thundercracker and Ravage in the Transformers' greatest battle on Earth, "Digital Doom on the Highway to Destruction." According to Ravage, anyway. Recordicons #3

Ratchet visited a distant point in the timeline frequently in order to help out his fellow doc-bot, Rhinox, fool his teammates into thinking that he had all sorts of miracle cures up his sleeve. On one such visit, Ratchet wondered aloud how his numerous trips into the time-stream hadn't muddle the whole thing to mush already. Rhinox assured him that he had taken measures to prevent such a thing from happening. Satisfied, Ratchet dropped off a cure for stasis lock before returning to his own time, wishing Rhinox good luck in keeping his teammates in the dark about their meetings. SD SG #6

At some point during the Great War, the loss of a close friend left Ratchet traumatized. Shattered Glass #1
Ratchet took part in the final battle for Earth; after defeating the Decepticons, he and the other Autobots pillaged the planet before they returned to Cybertron. Shattered Glass #2 On the way back to Cybertron, Ratchet was able to convince Optimus Prime to revive the critically wounded Bumblebee, who'd taken severe damage from Megatron's fusion cannon. Using a spare protoform, Ratchet rebuilt Bumblebee into Goldbug, a faster, stronger, and outwardly more confident identity for the little warrior. Shattered Glass #4
At some point after the end of the war, Goldbug and Prowl attempted to depose Optimus Prime. Although the coup failed, Ratchet nevertheless sided with Goldbug's breakaway faction, and by the present day he had relocated to Goldbug's territory. As one of Goldbug's close associates, he spent most of his time working with Autobot bodyscrappers based in Gold City. When not interrogating the Decepticon prisoners they brought back for him, he spent most of his time experimenting on unwilling victims, using the steady supply of spare parts guaranteed by his position to try and create unbeatable Cybertronian that wouldn't have died by his side. When Blurr brought him Sixshot's corpse, Ratchet told him that Goldbug had put out a contract on Starscream, with express orders to bring him in alive. Shattered Glass #1
When Megatron and his remaining followers launched a full-scale assault on Gold City, Ratchet took part in the battle, but paused when he overheard the sound of Starscream dying and Jetfire screaming in agony. Shattered Glass #5

Toys
Combiner Wars
- Autobot Ratchet (Deluxe, 2016)
- Accessories: Combiner hand/foot/gun, axe
- Exclusive to BotCon 2016's customization class, Combiner Wars "Autobot Ratchet" is a redeco of the mass-retail First Aid with a previously-unused pretooled head. Like all Combiner Wars-style Deluxe Class toys, he can become an arm or a leg for any compatible Voyager Class torso figure. The toy came unassembled and unpainted (though pre-assembled unpainted versions were made available for sale later in the weekend), and the class attendees applied provided paint and stickers to complete the toy.
- While the front hood/windshields are needed to be folded as kneecaps for his leg mode, the piece also sticks out automatically if he collides with Optimus Prime/Motormaster's (or any of Hot Spot's redecoes/retools) protruding foot while the legs are being swiveled in his standing position, unless the leg joints are bent down to lessen the problem.
- Shattered Glass Ratchet was actually one of five different official decos for the unpainted "kits", the others being a Marvel Comics-inspired Ratchet, a G1 cartoon-based Ratchet, a Generation 2 Ratchet deco, and Medix, which used the automatically-included-in-the-sprues First Aid head. Four sticker sheets were available, but class participants were only allowed a G1 sticker sheet and one other of their choice. This was not a popular decision. Extra unpainted/unstickered pre-assembled versions of Ratchet with the Ratchet head were offered for sale at the convention to regular attendees.
- Class participants who finished creating their toy in-class were given an exclusive Enigma of Combination accessory that can be either held by Ratchet/Medix or fit into Ultra Prime or Optimus Maximus's chest.

- Shattered Glass Ratchet & Optimus Prime (2-pack, 2020)
- Series: War for Cybertron: Earthrise
- ID number: WFC-GS17
- Accessories: Pistol, roof/shield, lightbar
- A Generations Selects add-on to Earthrise, "Shattered Glass Ratchet" is a redeco of Paradron Medics Ratchet, itself a retool of Earthrise Ironhide, featuring a BotCon-inspired color scheme with the delicious purple Autobot insignia. Ratchet comes with a shield that forms his ambulance mode's roof and also comes with a miniature pistol that can be stashed away under the shield. The figure's feet stick out of the back of its ambulance mode, an issue shared with all iterations of this mold. Although stock photography depicts him with grey shoulder highlights, the final toy gives him purple ones instead.
- He is bundled with Shattered Glass Optimus Prime. Much like most 2020 Selects product, the toy is only branded as part of the War for Cybertron Trilogy and not Earthrise.
- This toy was repurposed as an Angolmois-corrupted form of Generation 1 Ratchet in Generations Selects Special Comic.

Notes
- In the original Shattered Glass continuity, Ratchet's first body is based on Energon Combat Class Roadblock's, with a new head. The character was intended to have a scrubs-based mint green as his base color.[1] In Evan Gauntt's pre-final "flat color" version[2] of Ratchet's first appearance, Ratchet is mint green in the original image. However, the dynamic lighting from the scene's overhead lamp caused other creators to interpret him as being white with green highlights instead of his intended mint green coloration. This misinterpretation of his colors has been reflected by every depiction of the character since, including his much-later Hasbro toy release. Oops?
- Ratchet's Autotrooper body is based on Combiner Wars Deluxe Class Offroad/Trailbreaker with a Hoist-style head.
- In Forged to Fight, evil Ratchet shares a CG model with his regular counterpart as a heavily stylized version of the 2008 Universe Deluxe Class toy.
