About us

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) is a national centre of excellence in the provision of specialist children's health care, currently delivering the widest range of specialist care of any children's hospital in the UK. It aspires to offer outcomes for children in the top five in the world. The largest centre in the UK for children with heart or brain problems, and, with UCLH it is the largest centre in Europe for children with cancer. It is the only specialist Biomedical Research Centre for paediatrics, it works in partnership with the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH), part of University College London, and together they form the largest paediatric research and teaching centre in the UK, and one of the largest in the world. The hospital at Great Ormond Street is the only exclusively specialist children's hospital in the UK. It does not have an Accident and Emergency department and largely only accepts specialist referrals from other hospitals and community services. The population of children served by the hospital is characterised by those with multiple disabilities and/or health problems and rare and congenital (present at birth) conditions.

  • At just 13, George is a passionate advocate for disability rights. ✨ In honour of International Day of People with Disabilities, we’re celebrating George’s remarkable impact. He’s worked to double wheelchair-accessible secondary schools in his area, modelled inclusive school uniforms to promote diversity, campaigned for accessible playgrounds, and shared virtual physiotherapy sessions with the SMA community. ♿👕🎮 George’s vision is a world where diversity in books, TV, and film leads to inclusion for everyone, saying, “Inclusivity isn’t just a positive for people with disabilities; it’s a positive for everyone.” 🌍📚📺 This year, George was recognised with two prestigious awards: Positive Role Model for Disability at the National Diversity Awards and a finalist spot at the Disability Power 100 awards, where his contributions were celebrated. 🙌🏆 Diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 2 at two, his care team here at GOSH, including Dr Manzur, Dr Scoto, and physiotherapist Marion Main, has been integral to supporting him and his family throughout his journey. Reflecting on his experience, George says, “I’ll always be grateful for the help and love the team has given me. GOSH is a wonderful hospital and has been a big part of my childhood.” 💙🏥 Looking to the future, George aspires to become an engineer, designing innovative equipment for wheelchair users like himself. 🛠️ He’s just getting started, and we can’t wait to see what he achieves next for children, young people, and adults alike. 👏✨ #DisabilityAdvocacy #RepresentationMatters #Inclusion #IDPWD

  • It’s been a joy to implement the ‘Active Advent’ programme, shared by our colleagues at the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle. Keeping active is integral to the health of the children and young people we care for, and staying engaged during the Winter months can be especially challenging. This year, our staff have brought festive activities to our ward, including reindeer hoopla, mindful colouring, dance parties, and festive jokes, all encouraging children, young people, and their families to get involved in the way that suits them best. Getting active is a core part of our care strategy, and our Children’s Cancer Centre is designed to make staying active even easier while in hospital. In addition to ‘Active Advent’, our annual Get Active summer sports day and our ongoing partnership with the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust are making a real impact. This fantastic partnership pairs GOSH patients with athlete mentors, supporting children and young people to build confidence and find ways to stay active. They have all been submitted to our image competition over the years. 📸 For four years we have been asking staff to submit images, photos, videos or illustrations that highlight any aspect of the amazing research, innovation and discovery that happens across GOSH. The images below have been taken by our researchers as they work to understand rare and complex diseases, bringing us closer to new treatments and cures. 👩🔬 Take a look at these amazing images through the gallery below!

Sharing learnings from our NHS-Industry data science collaboration. 🙌🏻 We want to make sure we are making best use of years of routinely collected data, to learn from the care we have provided before and ensure we are providing the best possible care for our patients today and in the future. In 2021 we announced our NHS-Industry partnership with Roche UK, with the goal of harnessing the power of data and AI to move towards more personalised care for children and young people with rare or complex disease. Through our first-of-its-kind collaboration we are also aiming to get a better understanding of how NHS hospitals and healthcare industry companies can best work together, and to share these learnings widely so that the work we are doing not only benefits patients and staff at GOSH, but across the healthcare system. We recently published early learnings from our partnership in the Future Healthcare Journal and have created a digestible playbook which we hope will be a useful guide for other healthcare organisations interested in working towards the future of health using healthcare data. Read more and download the playbook here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ek__j9nu We will be sharing a 6-part breakdown on this page over the next 3 weeks, so make sure you’re following us! All projects undertaken within the partnership are conducted within GOSH’s secure digital research infrastructure and no patient data is shared between the organisations or outside of GOSH.

“Shiuli is an outstanding individual. If we could all keep a bit of her with us every day at work and in our lives then her impact will be on a much larger scale.” Cathy Roberts, Associate Director of Education. Shiuli, a Moving and Handling Advisor at Great Ormond Street Hospital, was recently awarded the Making GOSH an Inclusive Place to Work Award at the GOSH Staff Awards for her role as a Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage (REACH) network member. “It is an honour to even be nominated. To win and be recognised for the everyday work I do and the positive impact it has on my colleagues is humbling. I want to take this opportunity to thank Cathy, Laura, Michelle, and Janet for encouraging me to be my authentic self at work and make a difference.” Shiuli says. Join us in celebrating Shiuli for helping make GOSH such an incredible place. 🎉
