Struggling to secure funding for your startup venture?
Securing startup funding can be daunting, but it's all about approach. With 8 billion people on this planet, we’re all unique. If you've chosen entrepreneurship, it's often a calling greater than yourself. Authenticity is key. As an entrepreneur, you're selling 24/7: yourself, your product, and your business. But remember, when pitching to investors, you're selling your business' ability to generate returns and manage risks. The product is a mean to an end. Focus on these two points: 1) What’s the opportunity? 2) How will you capture it? Let investors dive into product details!

How can you effectively network at a pitch competition?
The very nature of a startup entrepreneur is selling. You start by selling a dream, merely an idea to your self, to your cofounders, to your first customer, through to selling a resolution to a complex shareholders’ dispute, your growth financing, your next CEO and your IPO. You are always selling. If you are doing what you love this may come naturally. More introverted types, find a cofounder to focus on this. Pitching at event, following up, building relationships is the best way to create value. Somebody may prefer more transactional relationships, in my experience however investing in seed companies is a long time commitment. Take the time to get to know who you are speaking with. It goes both ways. Most importantly, enjoy!

How can you determine the right amount of funding for your pitch deck?
Drawing from my dual roles as an investor and entrepreneur, I view various investment stages as unique exploration journeys. A pre-seed investment in an AI Climate Tech Startup mirrors Cristoforo Colombo's pitch for his expedition—distinct from a growth-stage private equity investment. Higher risks often lead to higher rewards. Here, the founder is the expedition leader, and investors seek clarity on strategy, mission, vision, and values. Anticipating the journey step by step, understanding resource needs, and identifying the critical path are crucial. Investing is an exploration, and the amount is variable for acceleration and risk mitigation. A prepared founder can differentiate the risk/reward proposition based on the level of investment

What are the pros and cons of bootstrapping vs. raising venture capital?
One thing I have experienced is bootstrapping forces entrepreneurs to focus on value creations: identifying customers, decreasing cost per acquisition, securing incremental revenues on existing customers. This is testing and building your business from the ground up to maximise the founder and investo return on the investment.

The flatulent chipmunk quickly became a star among Italian teenagers and the wider public. The 2008 challenge was to turn Cippi from advertising property into entertainment icon. The response was to treat Cippi like an entertainment brand and produce 12 cartoon episodes. Distribution came through editorial partnerships both on mobile - Vodafone enabled free access to 28 million people; and online - the films were placed on premium content portals. This led to seven million interactions, and the Cippi series even made it onto national TV. -

Air Action Vigorsol was the best-selling chewing gum brand in Italy, a position it had enjoyed for a number of years. Like every other chewing gum market, the category in Italy was largely impulse-driven, meaning top-of-mind awareness was key. Traditionally, Vigorsol had created popular TV ads which communicated the main product benefit - namely, that it delivered a refreshing blast of cold air when chewed - in a light-hearted fashion. By 2007, however, both internet and 3G mobile phone penetration were growing rapidly in the country, meaning television was not delivering the same levels of long-lasting awareness as previously. To address this problem, it was decided Vigorsol should look to develop an "entertainment property" rather than an "advertising property". Ultimately, this took the form of Cippi, a chipmunk with an "incredible powers to create icy farts", an ability given to him by Air Action Vigorsol. A buzz about the campaign was created by seeding exclusive material with influential bloggers, with TV also creating a "big bang" at launch, and a range of other digital content, such as online games and mobile apps, helping to "fill in the gaps" between these forms of media.
