The 2025 Rose Bowl (officially known as the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the 2025 Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential for sponsorship reasons) is a college football bowl game that is scheduled to be played on January 1, 2025, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The 111th annual Rose Bowl game will be one of the playoff quarterfinals and will feature two of the playoff teams. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. PST. The Rose Bowl will be one of the 2024–25 bowl games concluding the 2024 FBS football season and the winner will advance to the college football playoff semifinals.[2][3]
Background
[edit]The 2025 Rose bowl is a quarterfinal game for the College Football Playoff (CFP).[4] Oregon being the number 1 team in the final CFP rankings and winning their conference championship game, received an automatic bye in the new 12 team format of the CFP and was selected to play in the bowl game. No. 9 Tennessee and No. 8 Ohio State will compete for the other spot in the Rose Bowl on December 21, 2024.[4][5] The winner of the Rose Bowl will advance in the playoff to the Cotton Bowl to face the winner of the Peach Bowl.[6]
If the Ducks play Ohio State, it will be their 12th all-time meeting as well as their first post-season meeting since the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship and their third meeting in the Rose Bowl, following the 1958 and 2010 editions of the game. [7]
By contrast, if Tennessee beats the Buckeyes and advances, the game will be the third all-time meeting between the Ducks and the Volunteers, with the latest meeting taking place at Autzen Stadium during the 2013 season, with Oregon winning by a score of 59–14. [8]
