Out of Scope?
[edit]Per WP:NOTGUIDE, I am not sure this template should exist. We have Wikivoyage for that. Have I misunderstood the policy? Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 23:06, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- Here is the text from Wikipedia:NOTGUIDE:
- "Travel guides. An article on Paris should mention landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, but not the telephone number or street address of the "best" restaurants, nor the current price of a café au lait on the Champs-Élysées. Wikipedia is not the place to recreate content more suited to entries in hotel or culinary guides, travelogues, and the like. Notable locations may meet the inclusion criteria, but the resulting articles need not include every tourist attraction, restaurant, hotel or venue, etc. While travel guides for a city will often mention distant attractions, a Wikipedia article for a city should list only those that are actually in the city. If you do wish to help write a travel guide, your contributions would be more than welcome at our sister project, Wikivoyage."
- It seems to suggest that including attractions relevant to a place should be expected of an encyclopaedic site but contact details, addresses etc. are the types of information that should not be included. It also suggests that notable locations can meet inclusion criteria as is set out in this template, e.g in this template, national museums only are listed not every museum in Wales. I think the template is ok, but you're welcome to tweak it if you think that certain parts need to be better aligned with this guidance. Titus Gold (talk) 23:22, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
This template seems more "Tourist attractions in" rather than "Tourism in", latter implies the industry rather than specific attractions, so namewise lacking scope. However, NOTGUIDE is more on the little details such as opening hours, so not fully applied here. While general articles do not need every tourist attraction, lists or templates could, although nation-wide tourist attraction templates are rare (we do not however, have to follow existing use), seems more common to split tourism attractions by categories for templates or have more localised templates. For example, the pre-existing Wales Museums and Heritage railways templates which this template greatly overlaps with or a local one for Cardiff. What is the criteria for "other attractions"? Is this a personal/one source definition? The template does lack scope, more on "notable things to do in Wales" rather than "how tourism operates". Removing individual attractions to just the organisations and list articles seems to improve scope in the absence of context. Small templates are not bad, not everything has to be in one template. The regional boards seem defunct btw. DankJae 01:34, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- Fair comments. I'm happy for the template to be tweaked to be more on tourism in Wales rather than attractions. Titus Gold (talk) 16:13, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- The criteria was partly defined by top 10 paid and top 10 free attractions on the Tourism in Wales page and other like national parks were common sense inclusions I suppose. Titus Gold (talk) 16:37, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- True, but prefer a link to that directly, rather than listing all the attractions in the template, as it is not stated why that selection. Plus such list could constantly change. As said, would prefer the template be virtually a list of tourism organisations and links to list articles of attractions, rather than list out every single attraction. - Sensible comments. I agree. I've made some edits to move more towards that. Titus Gold (talk) 23:01, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- Since made Template:Protected areas of Wales for all the designated stuff. DankJae 23:08, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
