The first bird to be called a penguin was the great auk (scientifically named Pinguinus impennis), a black and white flightless bird found in colder climates of North America. They were eventually hunted to extinction. The birds found in the Southern Hemisphere, though biologically unrelated, were called penguins after the auk’s scientific name, because they had a similar plumage.
