We are thrilled that the economic development bill recently signed by Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey includes a provision from An Act to Advance Health Equity: the creation of a pathway for foreign-trained physicians to obtain their license in Massachusetts in exchange for at least three years of medical practice in a healthcare facility serving state residents with the greatest need. This will increase access to qualified physicians and improved culturally competent care in rural and underserved communities. At a press conference hosted by Massachusetts Immigrant & Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA) for the Physician Pathway Act, Compact co-founder Michael Curry, Esq. shared “this is an important step forward for equity— positively impacting both our foreign-trained physicians as well as our patients. Our communities benefit broadly from this change.” Thank you to Governor Healey, Senate President Karen Spilka, Speaker of the House Ron Mariano, Joint Committee on Health Care Financing co-chairs Cindy FRIEDMAN and John Lawn, bill sponsors Jason Lewis, State Representatives Jack Patrick Lewis and Mindy Domb, Secretary Kate Walsh, Secretary Yvonne Hao, and all partners for prioritizing this important change towards health equity. #healthequity #mapoli

We are grateful for this inspiring conversation between Compact members Dr. Bisola Ojikutu, Boston Public Health Commission and Dr. Joan Reede, Harvard Medical School! Thank you both for championing health equity, and for lifting up the Compact’s mission and work through this conversation. In Dr. Ojikutu’s words, “the purpose of the Compact is to think about how we can harness our collective impact, amplify our voices as leaders, and what it is about our presence as leaders that makes a difference.” Highly recommend watching the full interview, hosted by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health for the many insights and wisdom!
Yesterday I had the privilege of being interviewed about all things health equity here in Boston by Dr. Joan Reede, Dean for Diversity and Community Partnership in the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Partnership at Harvard Medical School. In 30 minutes we covered my perspectives on Live Long and Well, Boston's population health agenda to close life expectancy gaps in our city, Boston's historic $21 million investment in the youth mental health crisis, the Health Equity Compact in Massachusetts, the role of mentorship and the importance of taking risks in one's career. Thanks to my alma mater Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Christina Roache, Director of Studio Programming at HSPH for the opportunity and of course, Dr. Reede for her leadership. We are so pleased to see Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey sign the Breast Cancer Screening bill into law, yet another strong step this legislative session toward increased health equity. Thank you to Senate President Karen Spilka, Speaker Ron Mariano and the legislative champions for this important bill. We are proud to partner with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the many other organizations supporting this critical legislation. Despite a lower breast cancer incidence rate, Black patients are almost 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white patients. This bill reduces the cost barrier to early breast cancer detection, a step towards closing the gap in outcomes and advancing racial health equity. #healthequity #breastcancerawareness
Thank you to Massachusetts Governor, Maura Healey, for signing into law a bill that makes breast cancer screenings more equitable. Dana-Farber is proud to support the legislation which provides greater access to follow-up breast screenings & requires insurers to cover additional screening for patients with abnormal mammograms or dense breast tissue.

Thanks to Compact Board Chair Amie Shei for keeping the focus on health equity. When equity isn’t explicitly considered and prioritized in policy solutions, we risk further marginalizing communities of color as we navigate each crisis. We must address racial health equity directly and integrate it into how Massachusetts addresses the dysfunction of the healthcare market, and set clear guideposts to drive toward health equity (not just healthcare equity) as we reshape the system. We look forward to continuing the conversation at the Health Policy Commission's 2024 Cost Trends Hearing later this week, "From Crisis to Stability: The Path to a More Affordable, Accessible, and Equitable Health Care System". #healthequitynow #mapoli
At the State House News Service/MASSterList "Urgent Treatment: Mass. Health Care After Steward" event earlier this week, there were important conversations about the fragility of the health care system in Massachusetts. David Seltz opened by sharing key takeaways from recent Health Policy Commission analyses, previewing some of the issues to be discussed at the upcoming cost trends hearing. Speakers Lora Pellegrini, Dr. Abha Agrawal, MD, FACP, FACHE, John Fernandez, Steven M. Walsh, and Greg Wilmot shared their thoughts on the most pressing challenges facing us in the Commonwealth in an insightful panel discussion moderated by Chris Lisinski. We cannot just move on post-Steward and assume that the health care system will recover on its own. Instead, we must roll up our sleeves and get to work on addressing challenges with access, affordability, equity, and more. This is a responsibility we must all share. I was glad to be able to ask the final audience question and have the event end on the topic of how we can use this opportunity to advance #healthequity in Massachusetts. It is not always easy to make it into Boston for an early morning event, but it is important to be in the room when health policy discussions happen in order to elevate the priorities and perspectives of The Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts and the Health Equity Compact. Compact leader Rosa M. Colon-Kolacko, PhD. MBA, CDM, SHRM-SCP's reflections on the 2024 Health Equity Trends Summit perfectly encapsulate the energy and commitment that are still radiating from the event in June. We thank Rosa for her unwavering dedication to #HealthEquity and know that, together, we can create a healthier, more equitable future for all. How are you pledging to promote health equity?
President and Principal Consultant Global Equity Learning, Culture Transformation, HR, Health Equity and D&IB Executive, Thought Leader and Researcher, AI/IT Implementation, Public Speaker, Community Advocacy,
I am excited about the success of the second HE Compact 2024 Summit attended yesterday by 700+ leaders. We imagine a world in which race did not determine how long and how well you lived. Gov. Healey reiterated her commitment “ MA is a leader in Healthcare and Life Science—inequities experienced by our communities are unacceptable. We have made equity a priority across the government. We need the will to make it happen” Legislative leaders are passing legislation, and HE reform promoting accountability, improving affordability, and access. We learned how commissioners, secretaries of health, labor, workforce, and economic development are embedding equity. In addition, community partners discussed the importance of co-creating solutions to address the specific needs of neighborhoods and build trust. I feel proud of the progress and Thank You for the hard work to impact the health of people who need us!. I am pledging again my commitment to promote health equity. Please join us! #HETS2024, #HealthEquityNow, #HealthEquityCompact, #AnActToAdvanceHealthEquity
