In our continued effort to champion health equity, the Division of Gastroenterology and Division of Liver Diseases have joined together to create #HEALD, which stands for Health Equity in Action for Liver and Digestive Diseases. Dr. Pascale White has been appointed as the inaugural Director of HEALD and will lead the program's initiatives to eliminate disparities in GI and liver care using data-driven insights, community collaboration, and targeted action to improve health outcomes for underserved populations. Additionally, she has been accepted into the United Health Fund's Health Equity Fellowship, a program designed to cultivate the next generation of health equity changemakers in New York. As a fellow, Dr. White will partner with a community-based organization and collaborate on an innovative project that moves beyond a narrow clinical focus to creatively advance care, reduce health disparities, and improve health outcomes within their served community. We are proud to celebrate and support Dr. White’s visionary leadership towards an equitable future. #HealthEquity #LiverAndDigestiveHealth #GIHealth #HEALD #HealthEquityInAction #HealthDisparities #NYC Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Pascale M. A groundbreaking milestone in U.S. transplantation has been achieved, with Mount Sinai playing a key role. The HOPE study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, reveals that kidney transplants from HIV+ donors are not only safe and effective but are just as successful as those from HIV- donors. “For years, federal law required HIV+ organs to be discarded,” explains Sander Florman, MD, Director of the Recanati/Miller Transplantation Institute at Mount Sinai and a study co-author. “The HOPE Act, signed by President Obama, changed that, paving the way for research to show that HIV+ organs can be a vital resource to help HIV+ recipients get transplanted faster.” “This study aims to make HIV-to-HIV kidney transplants standard practice,” says Meenakshi Rana, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and co-author. “This could also benefit all transplant candidates by reducing wait times and increasing organ availability.” Drs. Florman and Rana discuss the transformative potential of the HOPE study in destigmatizing organ transplants for people with HIV and its broader implications. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3Vw55m6

Dr. Gilbert Tang and Dr. Annapoorna Kini share insights on their research into whether valve choice or technology impacts clinical outcomes. “The interesting thing here is that there was a mortality difference, with a lower risk of death with the Resilia platform,” said Dr. Tang. “There were no differences in the risk of stroke. People might ask why, particularly since there was no difference in cardiac mortality. We attribute this to differences in paravalvular leak.” https://lnkd.in/eDGgatNX

Girish Nadkarni, MD, discusses his research regarding a novel artificial intelligence-driven tool that could transform brain pressure monitoring by predicting intracranial hypertension within seconds in patients in critical care units. He said, “This approach is new because it uses routine data from machines that monitor heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing—no special equipment is needed. Other methods often require inserting probes or using specialized devices, but this model can make predictions using data that is already collected in most ICUs.” https://lnkd.in/e4KTUXQp

Alessandro Lagana, PhD, discusses his research regarding the use of genetic tests to detect which patients with the blood cancer multiple myeloma should respond to targeted therapy. He said, “By knowing which patients might benefit the most, we can customize treatments to improve their chances of success. Doctors could use genetic testing to choose the best candidates for venetoclax treatment.” Learn more:https://bit.ly/3ZKNCJi
