About us
Food is more than just sustenance — it's a powerful way to connect with our heritage, community, and each other. Our fast casual restaurant, Tocabe, an American Indian Eatery, is one of the country’s only American Indian-owned and operated restaurants. Our online commerce site, Tocabe Indigenous Marketplace, connects people to Indigenous ingredients and ready-made meals. In everything we do, we are committed to sourcing ingredients from Native producers and embracing Indigenous traditions alongside contemporary approaches. We are on a mission to nourish people from Seed to Soul. We purchase from Native producers whenever possible to promote food sovereignty, strengthen local economies, and revitalize Indigenous cultures. For every order Tocabe Indigenous Marketplace receives, we donate ingredients or ready-made meals to Native communities around the country. Our goal is to create a sustainable supply chain that makes wholesome, high quality, culturally meaningful food accessible. We are rebuilding the original American food system.

Check out our latest feature in DU Magazine! Matt & Ben are proud University of Denver alumni. https://lnkd.in/gdVmDiwS Tocabe, located in Denver’s Berkeley neighborhood, is more than the only American Indian-owned and -operated restaurant in the metropolitan area specializing in Native American cuisine. Co-owners Ben Jacobs (BA ’05), a member of the Osage Nation of Oklahoma, and Matt Chandra (BA ’05) see it as “a community-driven, American Indian-focused food experience.” The duo also has an online Indigenous marketplace where customers can purchase Native and Indigenous-sourced ingredients—which supports the building of food systems, Chandra says. Today is #NationalBisonDay 🌄 Bison are the largest mammal in North America. Male bison (called bulls) weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand 6 feet tall, while females (called cows) weigh up to 1,000 pounds and reach a height of 4-5 feet. American bison are herbivores, eating primarily grasses, weeds, and leafy plants—typically foraging for nine to 11 hours a day. Bison are constantly on the move and even walk while they eat. That’s where the bison’s large protruding shoulder hump comes in handy during the winter. It allows them to swing their heads from side to side to clear snow—especially for creating foraging patches. For over 30 years, NWF’s Tribal Partnerships Program has partnered with Tribes to restore bison to tribal lands, communities, and cultures. ✨ Flashback to 1989 ✨ when Ben’s parents opened Grayhorse: An American Indian Eatery in Denver. This space became the heart of our culinary story, laying the foundation for what became Tocabe. Ben Jacobs, a proud member of the Osage Nation, spent his early years washing dishes and serving tables in his parents’ trailblazing restaurant. Years later, as students at the University of Denver, Ben and Matthew Chandra connected over a shared love of food, history, and culture. Together, they set out to share Native foodways in new ways. In 2008, Ben & Matt opened Tocabe: An American Indian Eatery—one of the country’s few American Indian-owned and operated restaurants—and later launched Tocabe Indigenous Marketplace, making it easier to find Native ingredients and ready-made meals. With initiatives like Seed to Soul, Tocabe sources ingredients from Native producers and gives back to Native communities, working to rebuild the American food system and create a sustainable supply chain that makes wholesome, high-quality, culturally meaningful food accessible. This Native American Heritage Month, we’re celebrating where it all began and the people who make it possible. 🤚💜 #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #Tocabe #IndigenousCuisine #GrayhorseLegacy

Thank you to everyone who supported the inaugural One Lacrosse Gathering Celebration! 🥍 Is amazing to see so much great coverage of the event. Check out the latest feature in The Washington Post. Excerpt and link to full article below. It was the first gathering of its kind on the National Mall, in preparation for the first Olympics in over a century to feature America’s first team sport. Organized by the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, the event drew Native Americans from throughout the country who hope a confederation of tribes will be allowed to compete as a nation in the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. The idea for the One Lacrosse Gathering originated with fitness council member Ben Jacobs a member of the Osage Nation and co-founder of an Indigenous restaurant and market in Denver. Jacobs has worked with the federal government to promote local, traditional and nutritious food for tribal communities and saw the lacrosse festival as a way to expand his advocacy and to shake up lacrosse’s reputation as a wealthy suburban sport. “This is a game that is designed for all,” he said. “It’s a game of diversity and inclusion, about respect and determination. So we want to share that as Native people to the American public.” #OneLacrosse #PresidentsCouncil #Sports #Fitness #Nutrition #lacrosse #Olympics https://lnkd.in/gq65Y6eq
