Google, OpenAI and Microsoft all warn that their products are ‘hallucinating’, and thus try to avoid responsibility and put it on the user, while knowing that most humans will eat all the lies they cannot detect immediately. I recently had an insightful conversation with Hoss Habib, co-founder and CEO of Key Ward, @keyward.io, an AI company focused on enhancing engineering design processes through machine learning.   We discussed a critical challenge in applying AI to engineering: "For predictive and generative AI to be effective in engineering applications, the learning model often requires such vast amounts of engineering data that by the time you've collected the necessary data, much of the engineering work has already been completed." Given this challenge, in which areas of engineering is AI likely to have the most significant impact?   This led us to explore where generative AI could have the most significant impact in engineering processes and potential entry points for AI in this field. We examined various industries and engineering types that could benefit most from AI integration.   Many AI specialists agree that for AI to be effective in engineering, it requires access to large amounts of structured data and should focus on incremental improvements to base designs. For instance, AI can significantly impact the optimization of specific aerodynamic properties in wind turbine blade design.   An exciting market entry point we discussed is the use of generative AI in product design and production processes, specifically to reduce the carbon footprint of manufacturing. AI could substantially decrease the number of simulations needed to optimize production efficiencies.   Carbon reduction has become crucial for manufacturing industries due to regulations and the increasing importance of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) scores in investment decisions. Both the EU and US are seeing a shift towards prioritizing companies with strong ESG performance.   Leveraging generative AI to optimize and improve a design's or manufacturing process's carbon footprint could serve as a viable entry point into the engineering market, significantly impacting a company's environmental performance and, by extension, its attractiveness to investors and regulatory compliance.

Technology and Genocide: Post 2 #TechForPalestine #TechForPeace Google was established with the motto "don't be evil," which later evolved to "do the right thing." However, Google is failing to uphold both mottos by engaging in the cloud computing work under Project Nimbus, initiated by the Israeli government and military. According to the International Court of Justice, they are plausibly committing genocide. Videos, reports, and statistics depict the tragic reality of 15,000 children killed in 150 days of genocide, averaging 100 deaths per day, equivalent to the destruction of five September 11 towers filled with innocent children. This reality underscores Google's departure from its ethical principles. Its current leadership practices support Zionist agendas over Google's main mission, inverting the motto and leading technology down the darkest of paths. Similarly, Amazon's slogan "work hard, have fun, make history" is compromised by contracting with Project Nimbus, contributing to a shameful history. The terms of the contract prohibit service disruption due to boycott pressure and deny service to specific government entities. While executives may choose complicity, engineers need not follow suit. As engineers and tech workers, we should not be subjected to exploitative contracts, especially those facilitating genocide. Company decisions should not align with government policies that mandate unethical actions. Similarly, companies should not feel compelled to sign such contracts due to pressure from powerful elites or political influence. However, companies like Amazon and Google have the autonomy to accept or reject contracts with governments, including their own. By accepting the Nimbus contract worth $1.2 billion, these companies are reducing the lives of 5 million Palestinians living under the illegal Israeli military occupation to mere economic transactions, valued at $240,000 per life. This amounts to the average yearly salary of a software engineer. Is it justifiable to equate the loss of all human rights, including the right to life, for a Palestinian with your yearly income? As engineers and tech workers, don't succumb to contracts like Nimbus, as we directly witness the harrowing consequences on the other end of the system—ongoing genocide against the children of Gaza. It's abhorrent. In software development and computer science, the principle of "garbage in, garbage out" emphasizes the vital importance of improving input to prevent flawed outcomes. Yesterday, I had an enlightening conversation with Mushahid Hussain, a hypervisor engineer at Amazon Web Services (AWS), who is driving impact by working on EC2 instance servers — the backbone that powers billions of users and businesses worldwide. It was inspiring to hear about his journey and the impact he's making. Here are a few key takeaways from our discussion: 👉 Go against the tide: Mushahid is passionate about low-level programming and virtualization — fields that aren’t necessarily trending but are his true passions. Because of this, he stands out in a market saturated with individuals chasing AI, often without a deep understanding. The lesson here is that it's not about the scope of a trending technology; it’s about the value YOU can create from it. 👉 Mentorship matters: Mushahid’s success was greatly shaped by the mentors who became means for his guidance. Seeking help from experienced individuals can help you learn from their mistakes, allowing you to avoid repeating them, and their successes, allowing you to replicate them. 👉 Just give it a try: Mushahid was initially hesitant to apply to big tech companies, but his mentors encouraged him to go for it. His advice? Don’t overthink the outcome. Apply and take the chance. The best-case scenario is acceptance, and the worst-case scenario is learning valuable lessons for the next opportunity. Mushahid tried—and got into Amazon. 👉 Imposter syndrome is real: Entering a big tech company can make you feel out of place when you see others who seem more capable. Mushahid’s approach is to view this positively — it means you're in the right company and have a chance to grow. Imposter syndrome isn’t a setback; it’s a signal that there’s more to learn and the opportunity to learn from a community not everyone has direct access to.
