Conversations I’ve had with media leaders and peers this year have centered around a common theme: the need to break out of traditional bubbles. The focus is shifting toward more human-centered engagement—listening directly to those impacted by the work we do and fostering trust through authentic dialogue. This highlights a critical point: trust is built not just through what we say, but through how well we listen and adapt. I’ve been prioritizing three words to inspire me this year: 🎯Clarity 🤝Connection ✍️Authenticity These words continue to guide how I approach every conversation, decision, and story. State of play: A recent Memo report found that 56% of CCOs are reporting to the CEO — an increase of 34 percentage points since last year. I loved seeing insights like that in Eleanor Hawkins's Axios Communicators Newsletter this week. It's a topic that is becoming increasingly important as the look of C-Suites continues to change each year. A separate report by the Observatory of Corporate Reputation found that CCO+ roles have increased by roughly 88% within the Fortune 1000 since 2019, outnumbering traditional CCO roles for the first time. I have been a long-time advocate of the CCO reporting to the CEO, indicating the importance of the role as well as its differentiating the position from the CMO which is complimentary but has a different lens to the brand. This hasn't historically been the case but I love to see this shift and its continued trend upwards! https://lnkd.in/gwEeuKxu

Integrating AI-driven tools requires publishers to navigate privacy laws, intellectual property issues, and bias prevention strategies. “Publishers should start by examining state AI laws in the U.S.—particularly in Colorado, Utah, and California—to see if these laws apply to them directly,” advises Myriah Jaworski Esq., CIPP/E, CIPP/US, a Data Privacy attorney at Clark Hill Law. https://lnkd.in/getBQknB For instance, California’s Privacy Protection Agency is developing rules focused on automated decision-making tools, including AI for ad targeting, which will directly impact publishers. These regulations may require publishers to offer consumer disclosures about how AI tools are used and may even involve transparency measures like AI watermarking or access to AI detection tools. To address AI-related bias, publishers must regularly test and monitor algorithms to prevent discriminatory outcomes. “Businesses should consider conducting bias assessments for their AI tools, similar to processes outlined by New York Local Law 144,” Jaworski notes. This involves assessing for fairness pre-deployment, annually, or whenever publishers make major modifications to ensure compliance and maintain ethical standards. Transparency and accountability are essential. Jaworski explains, “Clear disclosures, whether standalone or embedded in privacy policies, are key.” IP considerations are also crucial, especially in AI-generated content. For copyright protection, publishers must ensure substantial human involvement in AI-assisted creations. “IP standards are still being clarified, but publishers should work closely with counsel to navigate these emerging issues,” she emphasizes. Incorporating AI technologies allows publishers to engage audiences in new ways, streamline ad operations, and develop tailored content. As they maneuver complex regulatory and ethical considerations, publishers are finding the balance between AI-driven efficiencies and the creativity and depth that define quality journalism. Through strategic partnerships, robust AI tools, and adherence to privacy and bias regulations, publishers are enhancing audience experiences and setting new standards for responsible AI use in media.

Our 2nd annual Evolving Role of Comms report is out! My 3 standout findings this year: 1) The clear shift in reporting structure. It's no longer a split between the CEO and marketing -- there's a clear winner. 2) Comms teams are not prioritizing changing perceptions. Instead, they are sticking to key messages. (A lesson learned in this year's Crisis Index too!) 3) Agencies are focused on contextualizing successes over just securing hits.
