How Web3 is decentralizing AI and how big is the opportunity: As AI technology has become increasingly powerful, the AI industry has become extremely centralized, concentrating the decision-making power in the hands of a few companies to the potential detriment of society, many here on LinkedIn are talking about the risks. Web3, and its properties of decentralization and transparency, offer potential solutions to some of these risks. Decentralized AI refers to AI services that leverage Web3 (blockchain technology) to distribute ownership and governance of AI in a manner that is designed to increase transparency and accessibility. Grayscale Investments Research team, FiCAS research team and I (see my previous posts about the decentralization of AI) believe that decentralized AI holds the potential to bring these important decisions out from walled gardens and into public ownership. Blockchain technology can help increase developer access to AI, lowering the barrier for independent developers to build and monetize their work. This could help improve overall AI innovation and competition as well as provide balance with the models developed by tech giants. In addition, decentralized AI can help democratize access to investing in AI: - - Currently, there are very few ways to gain access to the financial upside associated with AI development besides through a few tech stocks. - Meanwhile, significant amounts of private capital have been allocated towards AI startups and private companies, some sources suggest around $47 billion in 2022 and $42 billion in 2023. - As a result, the financial upside of these companies is only available to a small portion of venture capitalists and accredited investors. - In contrast, decentralized AI crypto assets are available to everyone, allowing all to own a part of an AI future. Sam Altman's cryptocurrency venture Worldcoin has rebranded as "World" and unveiled a new generation of its iris-scanning Orb technology, as reported by TechCrunch. The company's shift away from its crypto-centric name signals a broader focus on identity verification and AI-related services, while introducing enhanced hardware and features aimed at scaling its user base globally. Key aspects of the rebranding include: - A new focus on identity verification and AI-related services, moving beyond cryptocurrency. - The introduction of World Chain, a Layer 2 Ethereum-based blockchain network for improved scalability and security. - The development of Deep Face technology to combat online deepfakes and impersonation. - A beta version of World ID credential as an alternative to traditional government IDs for online use. Despite the rebranding efforts, World continues to face regulatory challenges in various countries, with ongoing investigations in the EU that may impact its expansion plans. The next-generation Orb 2.0, unveiled at the San Francisco event, boasts significant improvements over its predecessor. Equipped with a Nvidia Jetson chipset, it offers five times the AI capability while using fewer components. This new device operates three times faster, making it easier to mass-produce and deploy. MAKERDAO ANNOUNCES THE FIRST PHASE OF "ENDGAME" TRANSFORMATION WITH TWO NEW TOKENS - MakerDAO, the issuer of the $DAI stablecoin, has officially announced the launch of the first phase of its transformative project, "Endgame." - According to a statement by founder Rune Christensen on the project’s official governance forum, the first phase of Endgame is slated for mid-2024. - The release will introduce two new tokens, provisionally named NewStable and NewGovToken, marking a significant expansion of MakerDAO's token ecosystem. New Features and Expansion: - Endgame's launch season will occur in successive stages, beginning with the unveiling of a new brand. A month later, the much-anticipated NewStable and NewGovToken will be available, offering improved features and functionalities. - Users will have the option to upgrade their existing Dai and Maker (MKR) tokens to the new coins, which are expected to incorporate novel staking and yield farming capabilities. - Notably, the stablecoin Dai and MKR governance token will continue to exist in their current forms. - In addition to the token launch, MakerDAO plans to introduce several new features, including the Lockstake Engine and a low-cost bridge connecting Maker ecosystem tokens to a major Layer-2 network. Future Phases: - Founder Rune Christensen highlighted that the Endgame project will progress through additional phases, focusing on scaling Maker’s SubDAOs and introducing a new Layer-1 blockchain. - Furthermore, Christensen discussed Maker's first SubDAO, Spark, which is going to offer real-world assets and perpetual swap yields.
