[OCEAN DECADE CONFERENCE POST] How can #transdisciplinary and #humanrights-based methods and approaches deliver “the ocean we want”? 🌊 Exciting news for global ocean governance! 🌊 On November 21, 2024, 🇨🇱 Chile and 🇫🇷 France reaffirmed their commitment to ocean sustainability through a strengthened cooperation framework. As part of this historic collaboration, Chile expressed its support for the creation of an International Panel on Ocean Sustainability (IPOS). This endorsement underscores Chile's leadership in ocean conservation and reinforces the growing international momentum for #TowardsIPOS. What are the regional priorities, challenges, and gaps in achieving sustainability, carbon neutrality and circularity in the #BalticSea and #NorthSea regions? In a new publication from the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology (Anda Ikauniece, Aurelija Armoskaite), Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) / Geologian tutkimuskeskus (GTK) (Eero Asmala, Karoliina Koho), University of Tartu (Liisi Lees, Merli Rätsep) & NCBR Office in Brussels (Maciej Zdanowicz) we examine  three comprehensive desktop studies focused on the sustainable blue economy in the Baltic and North Sea area. These studies included research and national surveys to: 1) provide an overview of sustainable blue economy sectors, identifying regional priorities and industry challenges in achieving carbon neutrality and circularity; 2) analyse assessment practices related to the sustainable blue economy, including policy evaluation practices and indicators at both national and EU level; and 3) assess current industry approaches, strategies, and frameworks for achieving and measuring carbon neutrality and circularity. A whole-of-society approach is key to address nature-related goals. 🌎 🌱 At the recent Nature Action Dialogues 🌿 hosted by UNEP-WCMC, we brought together 175 private sector stakeholders and nature experts to collaborate on a series of interactive discussions and workshops under the event’s theme “The Road to CBD COP16: Scaling private sector action in support of global goals.”  Reflecting on the 2️⃣ day event, we share our key takeaways:   🤝 Implementation of the #GBF requires collaboration across local, national and global scales. 📊 Nature recovery requires transformative economic change. 🔎 Businesses and financial institutions need accessible biodiversity-related data and guidance. 💰 The annual US$700 billion biodiversity-finance gap needs to be filled by 2030. 👪 #HumanRights must be integrated into nature strategies from the offset, not retrofitted. 💪 Important to overcome barriers through multi-sector collaboration.
