As the climate crisis worsens, the role of Artificial Intelligence (#AI) in navigating and mitigating its impacts, particularly on developing countries, becomes increasingly important. This blog by UNU-CPR's Head of Anticipatory Action and Innovation Eleonore Fournier-Tombs discusses how fostering "AI ecosystems" can drive innovation to benefit local communities and support climate action. She outlines five key ideas, which she will present at the upcoming Expert Meeting on AI and Climate in Bonn, Germany, organized by United Nations University - Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and UN Climate Change Technology Executive Committee on 1–2 July. #AI4ClimateAction Read the blog here: https://lnkd.in/ehZ-D6YV

AI has the power to transform how we tackle climate change, but its success depends on high-quality, reliable data. Ensuring that AI systems are built on a foundation of trustworthy data, backed by rigorous standards and accredited verification, is essential for maximizing its potential. From clean fuels to climate resilience, standards and accredited verification programs are driving sustainable innovation while reducing environmental impacts. As we mark World Standards Day, Emilie Sartoretto and Tom Lebrun, Ph. D. Lebrun wrote about how standards and accredited assessments are paving the way for AI-driven climate solutions. https://ow.ly/HhqY50TNVCT #WorldStandardsDay #AIforGood #ClimateAction #FrugalAI

Could someone explain to me how AI is going to solve the climate crisis? This is a sincere question, I don't understand what the argument is. My priors: I am happy to accept the premise that AI will unleash all kinds of innovation, but what I can't see is how this innovation will cut carbon emissions in the real world in the necessary time frame, especially given the likely increase in emissions from data centers. That said, I am willing and happy to be proven wrong if someone has looked into this issue in more detail than I have.
The Stunning Cynicism of Tech Bros From the NY Times Tuesday article, "The A.I. Power Grab," which cites the Disconnect Blog in the link below: >>Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, recently said that the artificial intelligence boom was too powerful, and had too much potential, to let concerns about climate change get in the way. Schmidt, somewhat fatalistically, said that “we’re not going to hit the climate goals anyway,” and argued that rather than focus on reducing emissions, “I’d rather bet on A.I. solving the problem.”<< Is that fatalism, cynicism, or just the same 'move fast and break things' greed that turned so much of social media into a cesspool of climate denial and disinformation? https://lnkd.in/en32Xwyu
