Microsoft has launched a decarbonization team focused on reducing emissions from its supply chain, a move that builds on the tech giant’s sustainability strategy and sustainable solutions suite. Microsoft’s director of sustainability overseeing cloud operations and innovation, Charlie Sellars, announced the news in a LinkedIn post. The three-member team will help Microsoft tackle scope 3 emissions generated by purchased goods and services, as well as those produced by its cloud and artificial intelligence operations, per Sellars. The three appointees include an in-house Microsoft veteran Tim Hopper, who has worked at the company for over two decades, along with Google’s former senior manager for cloud services sustainability Ray Waweru and Meta’s former net-zero lead Sofia Khan, according to the post. Hope everyone is having a great start to September. Curious about Microsoft🏋️♀️'s efforts in sustainability? Our review is ready. Aashita Shah and I paged through Microsoft's 2024 Environmental Sustainability Report. Then, we marked wins and opportunities. This week's ThisRock video 📺 covers our thoughts across pros, cons and next steps. Have a watch, or read our summary below: PROS: 1. Carbon Reduction: Microsoft has made impressive strides in reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, aiming to be carbon negative by 2030, with a 10% year-over-year reduction. 2. Renewable Energy Commitment: They are on track to power 100% of their global operations with renewable energy by 2025, already reaching 80%. 3. Water Positive Initiatives: Focus on water-stressed regions with innovative water recycling systems, contributing to global water scarcity solutions. 4. E-Waste Reduction: Significant progress in closing the loop on product lifecycles with circular centers and partnerships to reduce hardware and packaging waste. 5. Transparency in Reporting: Adopting rigorous standards like TCFD and SASB ensures measurable sustainability efforts and increased corporate transparency. CONS: 1. Scope 3 Emissions: A major challenge due to their vast supply chain, requiring intensified efforts to reduce these indirect emissions. 2. Water Usage in Data Centers: While aiming to be water positive, Microsoft’s growing AI and cloud services demand increases pressure on water resources. 3. Reliance on Carbon Offsets: Critics argue that relying heavily on carbon offsets instead of reducing direct emissions may not address long-term sustainability challenges. 4. Circular Economy Gaps: Despite efforts, fully implementing a circular economy across all operations and products remains a complex and ongoing challenge. 5. Embedding Sustainability in Innovation: Balancing innovation with environmental impact is crucial, and there’s a need for Microsoft to ensure sustainability is integrated into every new product and service they develop. Phew... that was a big list. What do you think of Microsoft's sustainability journey? Let us know in the comments. Nothing is perfect, but every step forward matters. Cheers!

I’m excited to announce that Kyndryl has released the second edition of the Global Sustainability Barometer study, commissioned by Microsoft – examining the roles that strategy, #data and #AI play in achieving #sustainability goals. The study, conducted by @Ecostystm, shows that while 84% of organizations place high strategic importance on achieving sustainability goals, only 21% use technology to reduce their environmental footprint and shape their overall sustainability strategy. This aligns with our Kyndryl Readiness Report findings – sustainability has clearly emerged as a defining challenge for businesses. The stakes are high – organizations know that the time to take action is now. And by integrating technology into sustainability strategies, they can turn abstract goals into actionable plans that proactively address the climate crisis.
