Microsoft has launched a decarbonization team focused on reducing emissions from its supply chain, a move that builds on the tech giant’s sustainability strategy and sustainable solutions suite. Microsoft’s director of sustainability overseeing cloud operations and innovation, Charlie Sellars, announced the news in a LinkedIn post. The three-member team will help Microsoft tackle scope 3 emissions generated by purchased goods and services, as well as those produced by its cloud and artificial intelligence operations, per Sellars. The three appointees include an in-house Microsoft veteran Tim Hopper, who has worked at the company for over two decades, along with Google’s former senior manager for cloud services sustainability Ray Waweru and Meta’s former net-zero lead Sofia Khan, according to the post. 🌍 Sustainability at Microsoft: Progress and Pathways Forward As we continue our journey towards a more sustainable future, I’m excited to share highlights from Microsoft’s 2024 Environmental Sustainability Report. This pivotal document, covering fiscal year 2023, reflects our steadfast commitment to the planet and showcases both our achievements and the challenges ahead. 📈 Key Achievements: Operational Emissions: We’ve made significant strides in reducing our direct operational emissions (Scope 1 and 2). Carbon Removal: Our efforts in accelerating carbon removal have been fruitful, with over 5 million tonnes in multi-year carbon removal offtake agreements1. Circularity and Waste: We’re designing for circularity to minimize waste and reusing cloud hardware more effectively. Biodiversity: We’re improving biodiversity and protecting more land than we use. 🚀 Innovating for Impact: The integration of new technologies like generative AI holds promise for innovative solutions to the climate crisis. However, it also presents new challenges, as seen with a 29.1% increase in our Scope 1-3 emissions due to data centre construction and AI expansion12. 💧 Water Stewardship: We’re intensifying efforts to reduce water use and replenish more water than we consume, particularly in our datacenter operations. 🔍 Looking Ahead: While we’re on track in several areas, we acknowledge the need to mobilize and accelerate progress where we’re falling short, especially in reducing our Scope 3 emissions and water usage3. Let’s continue to innovate, partner, and push the boundaries of what’s possible for a sustainable future.
