🌟 Hacktoberfest Practice Event 🌟
I participated in a Hacktoberfest practice event, facilitated by alx_africa Faces of ALX SEALX South Africa and EddieHub, contributing to an amazing open-source project by the EddieHub Community (https://lnkd.in/dv5vDX2q). 🌐✨
Contributing to open source is a fantastic way to sharpen your skills, collaborate with others, and give back to the tech community. This event was a great opportunity to familiarize myself with the open-source workflow, from forking a repository to making pull requests. 🛠️
Here are some valuable lessons I learned:
1. Understanding Git and GitHub Workflow: 🛠️ Gained practical experience with forking repositories, making branches, and submitting pull requests—essential skills for open-source contributions.
2. Collaborating in Open Source: 🤝 Learned how to work with other developers in a collaborative environment, emphasizing clear communication and following contribution guidelines.
3. Code Review Process: 👨💻 Experienced the code review process, learning to give and receive constructive feedback to enhance the quality of contributions.
4. Importance of Documentation: 📚 Recognized the value of well-written documentation for understanding a project and contributing effectively.
5. Problem-Solving Skills: 🔍 Enhanced problem-solving abilities by tackling real-world issues and finding solutions within the codebase.
6. Community Engagement: 🌍 Discovered the importance of being part of a supportive community, where you can learn from others and share your knowledge.
7. Confidence in Contribution: 🚀 Built confidence in contributing to open source, overcoming initial hesitation, and realizing that every contribution, no matter how small, is valuable.
8. Continuous Learning: 📈 Acknowledged that contributing to open source is an ongoing learning experience, with every project offering new challenges and opportunities for growth.
I am excited to continue my open-source journey and contribute more during Hacktoberfest and beyond. 🚀

Better Angels is excited to be part of LA Tech Week with a panel about how technology plays a central role in solving LA's homelessness epidemic.
The reason that this work matters so much is that slow, inefficient, lacking technology means that every aspect of the help, support, housing that outreach workers, case managers, shelter operators and non-profits do is more frustrating and less impactful than it could be. And, ultimately our neighbors are staying unhoused or in shelters for much longer than is possible. As we do so, software engineers lead our efforts in:
Frontend Development: Enhance the user experience of our mobile app with React Native.
Backend Development: Build and support API functionality using Django and GraphQL.
Infrastructure: Help optimize our AWS environment with Terraform.
Manual Testing: Conduct hands-on testing to catch issues and provide feedback on workflows, usability, and overall experience.
Automated Testing: Develop automated test suites for component, unit, and end-to-end testing, ensuring ongoing quality and reliability.
Our talented volunteers are currently working on core features across all these areas. In addition -- they’re tackling critical bug fixes, exploring developer productivity improvements, and engaging in data and software modeling exercises. They’re helping to refine every part of our app. Click here for more information about Better Angels' technology initiatives.

“I explore open source projects and integrate their processes in my team for faster development”
Open source projects changed the Internet as we know it today. Thousands of developers worldwide contribute to the development of open source tools and technologies to drive innovation.
Genesians also join open source projects. In an article for Genesis Blog, Pavel Kushneryk, Senior Software Engineer at Solidgate, a Genesis partner company, and Anton Pinkevych, Full Stack Team Lead at Universe Group , shared why they participate in open source projects and what benefits and issues they’ve noticed in the open source movement.
Swipe through the post to learn about their experiences, and find the full article on our blog to learn about the story of the open source concept:
