Those following my posts on LinkedIn know I talk a lot about the Indian digital health sector. To be fair I'm not the only party, and there is a growing focus by others on the local sector like Deloitte as shown by their recently published 'The future of Healthcare in India report' (link below). India is interesting due to the size of the local market, but I also see the potential for local companies to export digital health products and models to other markets with 'similar' characteristics. By similar I mean markets with large populations, low ratios of healthcare personnel and infrastructure per capita, moderate reimbursement systems and challenging digital infrastructure. Putting aside some very obvious differences like language this description would aptly describe the healthcare ecosystem in most large population centers in SE Asia. So I wouldn't be surprised to see Indian digital health companies expanding into other markets where their experience catering to the complex Indian market dynamics sets them up to be willing to navigate the challenge in other regions with fragmented market dynamics like SE Asia, the middle east and south America. Also, unlike the US, the market is big but not that big so there is more impetus to look at international expansion as a core part of the business model. Part of the strength of the Indian digital health market is the dynamics of the market itself. The govt is clearly keen to push for the digitization of the healthcare system, in part as way to compensate for the low ratio of healthcare infrastructure and personnel in the market. This helps create the right environment to test out new products and to generate some revenue before trying to expand to other markets. Outside of govt the positive interest by investors in the digital health space, and healthcare space in general, is another plus. The last little factor is also the willingness of consumers to use digital health enabled care models. In the Bain report I re-post last month on healthcare in Asia India was the only country in the Asia region to rank digital health companies in the top 3 groups they would trust as a source of healthcare information. It all adds up as an interesting market to watch in the digital health space, from both a market opportunity perspective and as a source of innovative digital health companies. #digitalhealth #digitalhealthcare #healthcareasia

By 2027, India's digital health market is projected to reach Rs.882.79 billion, and by 2030, India is expected to have 1 billion people using digital health services. India's progress in the global digital health sector extends beyond its vaccine distribution success, exemplifying its ability to harness technology for healthcare transformation. The Times Of India dived further into this topic in a recent article, emphasizing the transformative power of digital health in bridging urban-rural healthcare. Some of the underlying initiatives behind this transformation include: The National Health Authority, which implements the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), seeks health IT providers' Expression of Interest in developing interoperable digital health solutions, including Unified Health Interface & Health Claims Platform to connect and streamline healthcare services. Rising internet/smartphone usage, and government initiatives such as the National Digital Health Mission and Make in India have accelerated India's transition to digital healthcare, transforming its health infrastructure through rapid digitization.
