Thanks to the eSafety Commissioner for sharing this post and shining a light on the vital work being done by Our Watch during the #16DaysOfActivism. Preventing violence before it starts is a mission we must all champion, and addressing harmful attitudes and gender norms is key to breaking cycles of violence.
As someone who actively works to combat technology-facilitated abuse and coercive control, I deeply appreciate the inclusion of abuse through technology in this conversation. Technology is a powerful enabler for connection and innovation, but in the wrong hands, it becomes a tool of control, harm, and intimidation. Tackling these issues must be part of our collective effort to ensure safety and equality in all aspects of life.
The connection between harmful attitudes and broader issues like online radicalisation cannot be ignored. Recent cases in Australia and around the world highlight how young people are being drawn into harmful ideologies through digital platforms, with devastating consequences. Combating this begins with fostering positive attitudes, respect, and equality early on.
By working with men and boys to encourage healthy forms of masculinity and challenge harmful narratives, we can disrupt these patterns and create a society grounded in respect and safety. Technology can amplify both harm and hope—let’s ensure we’re using it to empower, educate, and build a culture where violence has no place.
This mission extends into our workplaces. Organisations have a unique role to play by creating cultures that champion respect and equality. This means implementing robust policies to address harassment, supporting education on gender equality and healthy behaviours, and fostering environments where everyone feels safe and empowered. When workplaces lead by example, they set a powerful precedent for the broader community.
Let’s stand with Our Watch and others leading this critical work. Together, we can build a world, both online and off, that is free from gender-based violence—one that starts with respect, grows through empowerment, and flourishes in equality.

This #16Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, we’re proud to highlight the impactful work of Our Watch, a national leader in the primary prevention of violence against women and their children in Australia.
Our Watch is committed to changing the narrative around gender equality and challenging harmful attitudes to prevent violence before it starts. Part of this work involves working with men and boys to encourage healthy forms of masculinity. Breaking cycles of violence and transforming gender norms is a role that everyone, especially men, can take part in. This is key to building a culture of respect and equality across society.
We stand with Our Watch in working towards an Australia free from gender-based violence, including abuse that happens through technology.
