(Inktomi Corporation, Foster City, CA) A developer of software for Internet service providers (ISPs), carriers and large websites. Founded in 1996, some of its more notable products were Traffic Server, a high-performance proxy server, and Ultraseek Server, which Inktomi acquired from Walt Disney in 2000. In late 2002, Verity acquired Ultraseek Server, having been previously renamed Inktomi Enterprise Search. A few months later, Inktomi was acquired by Yahoo!, ultimately donating Traffic Server to the Apache Foundation. The company name, pronounced "ink-tuh-me," was derived from a Lakota legend about a smart Iktomi spider.
