Software-based devices that are immediately available for user input right after being powered on. No matter how hard the industry tries, it takes quite a few seconds to boot up everything, including smartphones and tablets. The only true instant-on is to put the computer into sleep mode or turn the screen off on a mobile device. In such cases, it takes only a second or two to come alive.
