  • Truly a sad day for the Wikipedia community. I will miss his constant emails & texts. I regret not making more time for Tom and catching up for that next beer. • Nothing but good words to say about when we met, when JarrahTree showed a genuine interest both in my edits and in other aspects of life. I can fully understand why those with longer experience with JarrahTree will miss them greatly. CMD (talk) 09:52, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Shocked and saddened, especially after seeing him barely a week ago at WikiCon 2024. I'll miss his wry humour and advice. Bahudhara (talk) 10:20, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm so sorry for JarrahTree's family for their loss. JarrahTree and I often exchanged emails and he was a very decent man with a wide range of interests. He was also passionate about Wikipedia and I enjoyed collaborating with him on several articles, including by helping him with information on Australian military history and appreciating his input on all matters concerning Western Australia (on which he was an absolute font of knowledge). I'll really miss him. Nick-D (talk) 10:22, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • RIP. You will be missed. – robertsky (talk) 10:24, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm terribly sad to hear this. Jarrahtree was my first "wiki-friend" and we exchanged many emails over the years, so I was very glad to to meet him at last at Wikicon last weekend. My deepest condolences to his family. He leaves a big hole in Wikimedia - his contribution must have been enormous. Thank you for all your help over the years, jt. I will miss you. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 11:02, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I can't believe he's gone. JarrahTree (or Satusuro as I still sort of think of him) has been so indefatigably encouraging over so many years, I figured he'd always be there, never discouraged and always chatting. I keep thinking that if he's not replying to me on Telegram, I just have to try him on WhatsApp… but now, there'll never be another reply. Sam Wilson 11:55, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • What a shock, it's still sinking in... Amazing contributor to many Wikimedia projects, topics, ideas and admin and so encouraging to other contributors old and new. Like several others, I'm really glad I saw him in person at WikiCon just a week ago, and shared a laugh at the airport at what would be our final meeting. --Canley (talk) 12:12, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I will always remember our chat in the sidelines of Wikimania 2023 in Singapore: your enthusiasm about Indonesian topics, your kind encouragement, and your indefatigable passion for the Wikipedia projects. RIP. dwadieff 12:34, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh Tom, I couldn't believe the news, Graham's email. Didn't we just exchange emails? Did you not just ask me to look into this or that, with your sharp nose for socks and longterm vandals? I will miss you. Thanks for the many years of friendship and trust. Drmies (talk) 12:48, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Condolences to his family and a big loss to the project. Interacted several times on West Australian articles and by email. Willing to provide advice and even went off to get a photograph to improve an article I had started. Will be missed. Conlinp (talk) 20:04, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • JT and I became friends when I attended my first Perth Meetup (organised by him) in April 2013, after being an editor for several years without ever having met any other Wikimedian face to face. Over time, especially in light of my personal problems in recent years, he became probably my best friend, on or off line. As well as seeing him at Wiki events both here in Perth and elsewhere, I often spoke with him on the phone, and visited his and Annie's home for a chat. As others have written, he had a very wide range of interests, something he frequently demonstrated to me by flitting from one topic to another at the drop of a hat. Indonesia and his beloved Wheatbelt rail project were two of them. He was also interested in Tibetan Buddhism, amongst other topics. Recently, while planning my trip to Indonesia for the Wikisource Conference, I told him I was thinking of changing planes at Semarang on my way from Bali to Kalimantan. He replied that Semarang was one of his favourite places, and suggested that I also visit some others in Sulawesi and Papua. For practical reasons I didn't take up his suggestions, but decided to stay a night in Semarang instead of going to Kalimantan. I also intended to tell him of my decision, but hadn't yet got round to doing that before it was too late. So I guess my forthcoming visit to Semarang will now be an homage to him and his great interest in Indonesia. RIP mate. Bahnfrend (talk) 02:02, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • JarrahTree's loss will be felt throughout the Australian community and we have lost a truly great man, both on and off wiki. He was smart and kind and passionate about so many topics. I both loved and hated when he would find pages I was preparing in my sandbox and get excited about them - however, it did motivate me to finish them and finish them well! I loved his calls which could range from seconds to... much longer... He loved his family, he loved Wikipedia and he is one of the clearest examples of 'nerd joy' I can think of. Vale JarrahTree. • JarrahTree was the first to give advice and guidance when I made my first edit a couple months ago. He also invited me to the next WA meetup. Seeing the above messages I feel myself and future users will be missing out on knowing a great person. Loomhigh (talk) 02:46, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you for everything "sats" JarrahTree. A friendly and helpful Wiki contributor. We were roommates at Wikimania 2013 in Hong Kong. Very knowledgeable about his areas of interest, the history of the west coast of Tasmania being just one of many. Even though I've edited sparingly in the last few years, he would also leave a message on my talk page to say hi after I reappeared. A huge loss :( -- Chuq (talk) 12:53, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • R.I.P., Tom. The sad news reached me only today per a delayed Death notice in the West. I cherish the memories of your enthusiasm for knowledge and tradition, and your discriminating photography. Several times you motored down to see me in retirement--I will sorely miss those discussions about the merits and tribulations of my adopted state. Bjenks (talk) 04:49, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Massive blow for the Australian Wikipedia spaces. You were an amazing editor and you will be missed. Viatori (talk) 11:27, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I just heard the news of Tom's passing. A kind and passionate contributor to the project both on and off wiki - Tom was a stalwart of the WA project and Perth meetups. Our mutual promises of another real world coffee and catchup became a bit of a running joke to my eternal regret. This is very sad news. Moondyne (talk) 13:44, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

On the user page, please change {{user admin Wikicommons}} to {{user admin Wikicommons|nocat=true}} to suppress the category, as JarrahTree has been desysopped due to his passing. I've checked in my sandbox and this works, because it uses {{userbox}}; also see info about the nocat parameter. Graham87 (talk) 14:28, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Favourite article

[edit]

My apologies for adding this here, but most of my interactions with JarrahTree on-wiki were in regard to COI editing, which was my focus rather than his. (Off-wiki we had a lot of discussions, but they were more general than what I am looking for now). I have finally got a bit of time on my side, and I would love to work on bringing an article that JarrahTree cared about to FA (or whatever I can actually achieve). For those who knew what articles JarrahTree really cared about, is there something that I should be working on? JarrahTree meant a lot to all of us, so I would like to do some work that respects what he wanted to see done on Wikipedia. Normally this would be fairly easy to determine, but JarrahTree edited so much and so widely that I am having trouble identifying the right article, and thus I am hoping that someone else knows what direction I could go in. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. - Bilby (talk) 13:50, 5 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Bilby: The thing is that he had such a wide variety of interests; I'd say the top 50 or so of the articles listed in his topedits report reflected his priorities. The problem is that he probably had the most expertise and widest reading list (!) in those particular subjects out of anyone here. I don't think he was that concerned about raising articles to good/featured status; he never commented on a featured article candidacy, for example. He was more concerned with offering a helping hand to colleagues (both on- and off-wiki), maintaining/organising WikiProjects, and keeping articles free of bad edits. I don't want my response here to be the final word; other people who knew him might have different views. Graham87 (talk) 14:56, 5 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with what Graham has said. As far as I know, JarrahTree didn't have any particular favourite articles, just general topics he was interested in, which can be seen from the userboxes on his page. If you had to choose an article to improve in his memory, I recommend Eucalyptus marginata, also known as jarrah. Steelkamp (talk) 15:41, 5 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure it was a favourite, but one article that he mentioned to me the other day in Adelaide was Lilian Wooster Greaves. He mentioned Greaves to me a bunch of times over the years, getting me to help transcribe her poetry on Wikisource. Sam Wilson 01:31, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Last year JarrahTree and I had a brief exchange on my talk page over the state of the article on the Royal Society of Western Australia, which is still only a stub, and a poor comparison to the equivalent articles on the learned societies in other states such as the Royal Society of New South Wales or the Royal Society of Victoria (though, as he wrote, they could all do with more work!). I'm currently doing a deep dive, via Trove, into the history of the Adelaide Philosophical Society, which later became the Royal Society of South Australia; there must be lots of people with WP articles who played a role in the formation of the RSWA, or who were members, or award recipients. The (APS/)RSSA article also has a lot of redlinks, which points to a dearth of articles on notable scientists, a topic I've been exploring in relation to the recent South Australian Museum controversy; this may also be true for WA. Bahudhara (talk) 02:03, 6 December 2024 (UTC).[reply]
Thank you to all of you. I felt a similar way, that JarrahTree tended to edit so much that a favourite would be hard to identify. These are all great suggestions, so I think I will work though them. Even if none count as a "favourite", I think he'd be happy with the intent. Thanks! - Bilby (talk) 11:36, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
