Departmental Profile

The Calera Police Department has thirty-nine sworn officers, seven full-time dispatchers, one jailer, one records clerk and one victim services officer.

Shift Scheduling

  • Patrol officers average 43-hour work weeks, working 12-hour shifts. This schedule allows for patrol officers to have every other weekend off.
  • Dispatchers work 12-hour hour shifts (84 hours per pay period)
  • All employees could work non-standard hours, holidays and weekends.

Benefits (Full-time Only)

  • Starting salary for the full-time dispatcher position is $42,439.28 per year (Based on a 84 hours per pay period)
  • Starting salary for non-APOST certified officers is $46,799.48 per year (Based on a 43 hour work week)

Assigned Equipment

Patrol car loaded with some of the newest technology, digital in-car camera, docking station and mobile data computer.

Class A and B uniform's parade coat and hat, boots, rain gear, training wear, toboggan, ball cap, jacket, traffic vest, bullet proof vest, portable radio, aerosol spray, Glock 22 or 23 handgun, AR15 or M4 rifle, ruggedized laptop, duty belt, handcuffs, body camera, Taser and flashlight.

Application Process

A physical fitness test will be given to all Non-APOST certified applicants. If the applicant does not have a college degree, they must take and pass the Basic Abilities Test (BAT). Click here for more information on the BAT. These tests are to ensure that the applicant can pass the entry tests and ongoing tests in the police academy, should the applicant be hired

APOST Certified Officer Applicants are exempt from testing. APOST applicants should download the application and turn it in to the dispatch window in the police department or mail it to; Calera Police Department, 10947 Hwy 25, Calera AL 35040. The applications will be reviewed for completeness and screened for acceptable standards. The acceptable applicants will be notified when positions come available and will be invited to the interview board. If the interview board recommends the applicant for employment the applicant will be invited to an interview with the Chief of Police. If the applicant is being considered for employment by the Chief of Police the applicant will be required to successfully pass a background investigation, physical, drug test and psychological evaluation. After the applicant is hired as a probationary officer, the officer will be assigned to the department’s Field Training Officer Program for eight-weeks. After the successful completion of the FTO program the officer will be assigned to an open patrol shift.

Non APOST Certified Officer Applicants should download the application and turn it in to the dispatch window in the police department or mail it to; Calera Police Department, 10947 Hwy 25, Calera AL 35040. The applications will be reviewed for completeness and screened for acceptable standards. The acceptable applicants will be notified when positions become available and they will be invited to take a physical fitness test. Once the applicant has passed the Physical Fitness test, they will be scheduled for an interview. If the applicant does not have a college degree, they will be scheduled to take the Basic Abilities Test. A background investigation will be completed, followed by a second interview. If the interview board recommends the applicant for employment, the applicant will meet with the Chief of Police. If the applicant is being considered for employment by the Chief of Police, the applicant will be required to successfully pass a background investigation, physical, drug test and psychological evaluation. Once hired as a probationary police officer, the officer will be scheduled to attend a fourteen-week police academy. After the successful completion of the police academy, the officer will be scheduled and assigned to the department’s Field Training Officer Program for ten-weeks. After the successful completion of the FTO program the officer will be assigned to an open patrol shift.
