Integration of conservation and Livelihood is a way to go

On this International Day of the World's Indigenous People, here are 5 indigenous communities that are still alive and thriving, but need our protection to preserve their unique ways of life: 1️⃣ Yanomami (Amazon Rainforest) The Yanomami community inhabits the Amazon Rainforest. They are renowned for their deep connection to the forest and their sustainable way of living. However, illegal mining and deforestation pose significant threats to their land and lifestyle. 🌳🛻 2️⃣ Sami (Northern Europe) The Sami people, indigenous to the Arctic regions have a rich culture centered around,reindeer herding, fishing, and crafting. Climate change and industrial encroachments threaten their traditional livelihoods and lands. 🏭 3️⃣ Maasai (East Africa) The Maasai, known for their distinctive dress and semi-nomadic lifestyle, live in Kenya and Tanzania. They face challenges from land rights issues and modern development pressures, which endanger their traditional way of life and pastoral practices. ✊ 4️⃣ Torres Strait Islanders (Australia) The Torres Strait Islanders inhabit the Torres Strait Islands. Their vibrant culture and marine-based lifestyle are under threat from rising sea levels and environmental changes. ⛈️ 5️⃣ Hmong (Southeast Asia) The Hmong community lives in the mountainous regions of China, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. They maintain rich traditions in textile art, farming, and music. Today, on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (9 August), we're celebrating the contributions indigenous people make to our world and communities. 👨👨👧 This year's theme is "Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact". Around 200 groups of indigenous peoples currently live in voluntary isolation and initial contact, in remote areas including Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Peru and Venezuela. They choose to live detached from the rest of the world and live as their communities have for generations, hunting and gathering and in so doing, preserving their cultures and languages. Did you know? * An estimated 476 million indigenous people live across 90 countries and represent 5,000 different cultures. * Indigenous peoples' territories encompass 28% of the world and contain 11% of the world’s forests. They are guardians of most of the world’s remaining biodiversity. * Indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation face unique challenges often overlooked by the surrounding world. Developments for agriculture, mining, tourism and natural resources in their territories disrupt their way of life and destroy the natural environment that they have protected for generations. Sometimes great philontropic impact doesn’t come from writing a check. (I mean money is obviously relevant here, but bear with me on this one) The end of February marks a year. A year of getting stuck in. On a humid weekend in an iconic Valley in northern Italy at the Centrale Fies , the Protect Our Winters Italy team along with many other NGOs, and planet activist associations, met up. For 2 days we all sat around and with the help of Terra Institute, we talked. We talked, we connected and most importantly we felt safe. Safe to share the struggles and inspirations but most importantly hopes for the future of what the future of the planet activist network of Italy should look like. Fast forward a year, and from that gathering more projects have sprouted from the ground than my hands can count. We can now add to the Italian Planet activist menu;  - L’AltraMontagna: An independent newspaper dedicated entirely to the highlands  - Stati Generali Del Clima: A national gathering of all activist associations linked to the ecological crisis with political direction - Un’ora Per Acclimatarsi; A dedicated stage at the Trento Film Festival to discuss topics of climate change mitigation strategies in the highlands.  - #milanocortina2026 Winter Olympics Movement: A consolidated movement regarding one of the biggest events Italy has ever hosted. I’ll ramble on about some of those projects in the upcoming months. That gathering was facilitated by Patagonia Italy, without their grappling and rounding up effect we, as Protect Our Winters Italy may have never all sat in the same room, those connections never have been made, and these inspirational and motivation-giving (because that’s crucial too) projects would never have seen the light of day. So yes, Kudos to those who can bring people together. Today is the International Day of the World's Indigenous People! It's important to note that the Sangha Tri-National World Heritage Site is home to over 20,000 indigenous forest peoples (Baka, BaAKa, etc.)! Faced with a rapidly changing world, the BaAKa are generally very vulnerable and therefore subject to low standards of living and social injustice. With this in mind, FTNS has supported the TNS parks in implementing a number of activities to empower them economically and promote their rights! The three parks have developed complaints mechanisms to deal with the injustices and abuses committed against these people. FTNS also provided financial and technical assistance through the signing and implementation of a historic memorandum of understanding between Cameroon's Ministry of Forests and Wildlife and Asbabuk (Association of Forest Populations). In return, this guaranteed them better regulated access to the Lobéké and Nki national parks, the Ngoyla wildlife reserve and the surrounding region. FTNS also supports the Lobéké National Park in organising the annual Baka-Bantu Festival. The three previous editions have helped to promote and enhance Baka know-how to a number of local, national and international visitors! FTNS funds have also been used to equip and support civil society structures such as ASBABUK, Dimakali and the Bayanga Human Rights Centre (MFEP) to implement complaints management and cultural promotion mechanisms in the TNS protected areas. This mission is so important that FTNS devoted more than 154 million FCFA of its resources to ecodevelopment and co-management in 2023,. After a decade of living abroad in New Zealand, I've returned to the US with a transformed perspective. Witnessing child hunger firsthand and understanding the complexities of colonization amidst a tapestry of cultures has been eye-opening. The environmental impact of livestock on waterways was another revelation. Now, back home, I see things differently. The question that drives me every day is, "How can I make a difference?" While social media engagement is a start, it's clear that more proactive steps are necessary. I'm committing myself to find tangible ways to create positive change and I invite you to join me on this journey.
