If you happen upon a Newsweek magazine this week, do me a solid and check out the cover story! Rising political conflict and polarization are not just social problems. These forces are creating serious issues for business leaders and the workplace. People are disagreeing with coworkers more often than ever before, and more likely to seek employment elsewhere if they find that their peers or company leadership are not aligned to their beliefs. Smartphones, news apps, and echo chambers aren't helping either... Nevertheless, this is a challenge that business leaders need to address instead of ignoring it. The simple reality is, there are new rules for employee engagement today when dealing with politics at work. #HR #EmployeeEngagement #Inclusion #PoliticsatWork #Polarization #Culture Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gusCu-fz

Founder and convener at Mixing Board. Select strategic communications consulting engagements

Many years ago, I came into the role as Twitter's first VP of comms with lots of experience. But the job was hard. It kicked my butt. It was lonely. I thought about all my peers in comms and brand and wanted to find ways to bind the best minds and to share knowledge. I wanted these leaders to feel less alone. As a first step, I co-founded Pramana Collective with wonderful people and we dug in deep on some serious work that helped raise the value of comms. We also actively brought comms and brand leaders together. At Pramana I thought about shifting the collective into a community and Mixing Board launched in 2021. Now, we had an always on platform to get the best in the business ways to help each other. Today, Mixing Board has 450 esteemed members who not only really good at what they do but are generous and wise. Also today, the news is out: We are officially joining forces with Axios HQ and I couldn't be prouder and happier -- not just for our two businesses, but for the comms and brand community that has evolved so much since my days at Twitter and who is poised to have outsized impact in the decade to come. As I say in the post: "(Axios HQ and Mixing Board) are both are determined to give communicators the tools, resources, and expert insights and development that help them increase their impact and value. And, we do this with the recognition strong communication within an organization has a direct relation to the power and performance of external comms, brand, policy (etc.) efforts. And, most of all, all of this is directly tied to greatly increasing the odds of business success."

It all starts with communication and alignment. Communicators own making it happen." 👆 Too many smart moments from Mixing Board's conference to list, but this quote from Sean Garrett is sticking with us.

Last week, Mixing Board held its third-annual summit called MB (LIVE) in Austin. 150 of the most thoughtful minds in comms and brand discussed the evolution of communication, debated the impact of AI, heard about hiring trends, learned about being cyborgs, shared personal stories as leaders, workshopped real world opportunities together, and enjoyed the performance of a beautiful song. But the real magic of the event came from the ample moments personal connection that allowed old colleagues to catch up and for new friends to be made. We've reshared many posts from members in this feed that provide color on the true value of the gathering. Here are some of our favorite images from MB (LIVE). None of this would have been possible without the support of our sponsors. Thank you Day One Agency, Axios HQ, Milltown Partners, Scale, LaunchSquad, Daly, & KC Partners!

𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗖𝗢 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰  — and the way you succeed is by understanding how to drive and explain real business impact. Some of Gina Sheibley's advice for strategic planning: ▶️ 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺. “Think about the business context. What do we need to do next year? How do we need to change? Where do we need to focus?” That will help ensure the things that “pop up” don't put your goal at risk. ▶️ 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. “There are some things comms may not play a role in, but we're building awareness. It's important we have context as we plan and an ROI mindset. What can we deliver to the business?” ▶️ 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲-𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀. “If there is a byline, can that also be a piece of paid or earned or owned content? And then can we use it globally? Can we tweak it by industry?” ▶️ 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿. “If we have a big initiative and we drive share of voice” — something stakeholders might not get — “how does that help with organic traffic” — something they do get? ▶️ 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻 𝟴𝟬-𝟮𝟬 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲. Socialize your plan. It shouldn’t be a surprise to stakeholders. But build in flexibility. “I tell my team 80% of what we do should be on the plan, and 20% should be in response to something happening within the business.” Hear all her advice at the link in the first comment below

Join me and Jordan Zaslav tomorrow at 12:30 pm ET as we talk about best practices for creating an impactful comms strategy for the coming year. We'll get into how to analyze your impact, the value of setting a north star vision and why next year's plan shouldn't be the blueprint for the coming year. Register here: https://lnkd.in/geeRuDZY
