Silicon Valley has a loneliness epidemic. In San Mateo County, a whopping 45% of residents are struggling with loneliness and isolation based on a county-led survey in 2022. It’s so bad that the County's Board of Supervisors’ VP introduced legislation and declared a public health crisis and pledged to explore measures to promote social connection in the community.  I've mentioned these statistics before in group settings, but it’s often met with indifference or laughter, as people didn't think it applied to them. But, during a recent conversation at a happy hour after the Snowflake conference in SF, something surprising happened. Someone in the group spoke up and said: "This sounds like something that's affecting me." It was a stark example showing that the statistics aren't just numbers; they represent real struggles people face daily. If you live in the Bay Area like me, you rarely see people smoking cigarettes due to their known health impacts. But what if I told you that the impact of not having friends is equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes per day? My biggest takeaway from #Dreamforce last week: Agentforce blew my mind. It is real and it is coming for all of us. I think if I hadn't been at the conference and just saw the keynote announcing it, I would have dismissed it as yet another poorly named new Salesforce product which would evaporate by the time next year's launch rolls around. But I was one of 1,000 people there who had the chance to actually be hands on with it for 30 minutes with a Salesforce engineer. I loved it. And I can't stop thinking about what it means. Here's what happened: I spoke a voice note to a Slack channel about what I wanted my AI agent to do. My example use case was a chatbot which can recommend upcoming programs to someone based on their previous attendance, by pulling CRM data and scraping the organization's website to find upcoming programs. Users can ask questions about the programs, and then ask to be registered into one (which will create a registration record in the CRM). The Slack channel bot asked me some specific follow up questions to gain clarity on what I wanted, including what kind of situations should escalate to a human. Then it built my Agent and launched it on a working website. On the back end, the Agent Studio looks like the standard Salesforce interface. You can create natural language Instructions (a mix of guardrails and "guiderails") and Actions - data retrieval, data creation, Salesforce Flows or Apex, and more. You can tweak all the settings with easy point and click tools and then test it out in the same screen to see the results. I built the entire prototype sitting there at the demo - 30 minutes. Woah. My mind started racing with other potential use cases There are so many more opportunities for a generative AI that can retrieve and create CRM data. AND it's just really darn easy to create and modify and maintain. And - as I walked away I felt a lump in my throat. I felt a bit out of body, like the whole scene was a surreal movie set. Starting to implement a tool like this is going to bring up FEELINGS for people. It is not like going from spreadsheets to a single source of truth, which is the main arc we have taken our OpenTent clients on up to now. Retrieval-augmented generative AI invites a complete and total rethink of what is possible at work. It is a much bigger - and much more intense - revolution in how work happens than implementing a CRM. My head is still spinning and I would LOVE to chat about it with some HUMANS. Here's another post about a TedX Folsom speaker. Daniel Farber Huang founded the Eternal Access Project to protect and preserve banned books and ideas from censorship and oppression by archiving digital copies in secure vaults deep in the Arctic Permafrost, available to future generations. He is a journalist and documentary photographer, an author, and a corporate strategy consultant. Mr. Huang shared with us that 4,240 unique book titles were on the censored/challenged list as of 2023 - a 65% surge over 2022 - and that number is climbing in 2024 with book banning that is happening all over the country. Many of the titles are familiar classics that have been assigned reading for decades - I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, A Clockwork Orange, 1984, Lolita, Anne Frank, The Giver, The Color Purple, Beloved, The Catcher in the Rye, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Handmaid's Tale, Of Mice and Men, A Brave New World, To Kill a Mockingbird. The popular children's book Captain Underpants is on the challenged list!! Approximately half of the titles that are challenged, particularly in recent years, are LGBTQIA and/or BIPOC books. It is his personal mission to preserve as many of those books as he can at the Arctic World Archive on Longyearben near Svalbard (you know, the place that stores all of the world's agricultural seeds to ensure we can grow food!) So what can we do? The advice he gave was: 1. Read censored/challenged books 2. Talk about censored/challenged books 3. Serve on local school boards 4.
