In the age of rapid technological development, society finds itself grappling with its relationship with technology. Ted Kaczynski arises as an unlikely icon for those dissenting against the perceived dangers of modernity. In this article, Paige Christianne Andres explores the #Unabomber’s influence on online discourse about modernity and technological developments, how his anti-technological sentiment translates in the age of climate crisis and information overload, and how that increasingly shared sentiment leads to online communities mythologising the #UncleTed figure.

🌳As part of the Climate Solutions Catalyst (CSC) (https://lnkd.in/etfXJHe9) at Undaunted: Tackling climate change with innovation we are aiming to discover climate solutions from scientific literature. Our hypothesis is that these climate innovations exist but need to be unearthed. 🎉 That's why we are happy to present our preprint "Towards unearthing neglected climate innovations from scientific literature using Large Language Models" in the Latinx in AI (LXAI) workshop at NeurIPS 2024. In this paper, we've: 📃Collected ~100k relevant papers from OpenAlex ❔Designed 7 climate/market related questions to ask human evaluators and LLMs about these papers. 🚀Automated a process for the LLM to read 1000s of abstracts. 🔍Discovered some exciting (and possibly neglected) solutions and fields. This is definitely not our final solution, but a step towards a more complex workflow that'll allow entrepreneurs, investors and scientists to connect, discover and push forward new climate innovations. Paper: https://lnkd.in/edp7JPA6 Thanks to the amazing work of the CSC team: Christopher Waite Nicole Alhadeff and Larissa Kunstel-Tabet. And our co-authors: Diyona Dsouza Cathal Hughes and Alyssa Gilbert Please reach out if you have any comments/suggestions!

Through AI visualization, our researcher, Niklas Mensing, presented the summary of the conference breakout session, "Carbon colonialism: A new scramble for land in the name of the climate?" To save itself from becoming yet another tool of exploitation of people in the Global South, the Voluntary Carbon Market needs to include locals in project design and account for their circumstances, create real co-benefit sharing beyond mere monetary compensation, and operate within the broader framework of decarbonization. #CarbonMarkets #Sustainability #SmallholderEmpowerment #FairLAND24

Few people pay attention to party platforms, but they are important -- both in terms of knowing what candidates believe and in holding candidates accountable should they be elected to office. You'll see a drastic difference between the Democratic and Republican platforms this year. When you look at the Republican platform you'll see it's very "Trump." So much so that in an event yesterday Republican Liz Cheney thinks that there may need to be a new political party as the Republicans can't recover post-Trump. It's interesting to think about what a Cheney-led "Reasonable" Republican platform might be four years from now. Learn what this year's presidential candidates say about science and technology policy policy by reading this Forefront article. #Scipol #TechPolicy #ClimateChange #Energy #AI #PresidentialElection
