Are early warning systems on the front burner? As the frequency and intensity of natural hazards increase, driven by climate change, Early Warning Systems (EWS) are more critical than ever. These tools play a pivotal role in protecting lives, property, and communities from disaster—but to stay effective, they must evolve. 💡 So, how can we improve? 💡 In this session at #EGU25 convened by Markus Reichstein, Carina Fearnley, Dorothea Frank, Shruti N., Vitus Benson, researchers will explore cutting-edge developments and innovative methodologies that are revolutionising #EWS, steeping discussions on these two key points: 🔵 integration of Artificial Intelligence (#AI) to enhance prediction accuracy and real-time decision-making, 🔵 the importance of transdisciplinary collaboration—bringing together experts from diverse fields to tackle complex, interconnected risks. Deadline for abstract submission is 15 January, 2025, 13:00 CET. Deadline for a travel fee waiver is 2 December, 2024, 13:00 CET. Share your expertise and advance solutions for better adaptation! #ReducingRisksTogether #EarlyWarningSystems #DisasterRiskReduction #Innovation #ClimateResilience #NaturalHazards #AIinDisasterManagement #ClimateAction

Climate Week is here and it is going to be great! If you haven't already, register below to join us this Thursday for a super interesting conversation on how to balance the growth of AI with the natural resources needed for this growth. Our esteemed panelists represent some of the biggest companies in the space, and I am excited to be moderating what will certainly be a thought-provoking discussion. Come join us! #wearewsp
While AI drives innovation towards a more sustainable future, it also increases our demand for energy, water and other natural resources. Join us during Climate Week NYC for a dynamic panel session moderated by WSP's Sofia Berger, where experts Joyce Dickerson, John Frey, Dion Harris and Lucas Joppa will tackle this critical paradox. Discover how increasing demands for data and storage and data center infrastructure present both challenges and opportunities for addressing climate and sustainability efforts. We'll also dig into emerging trends in data center growth and evolution, and business sustainability goals. Register today: https://lnkd.in/d72vcgFB The session will be followed by a reception and networking event where you can connect with fellow attendees and discuss these important topics further. #ClimateWeekNYC #Sustainability #Environment #AI

Today we are taking the first, very exciting step toward scaling System beyond health with the addition of preliminary data about climate change and the environment! Climate change is the single greatest driver of complexity in the world — impacting virtually everything in some way, from migration to food security, infectious diseases to housing prices. Our aim is to use AI to represent this dynamic system accurately and comprehensively to help you understand, simulate, analyze, model, and predict its effects better, surface new solutions, and help make the case for investments and interventions. We'd love to hear from you if you're interested in the relationship between health and climate, the systemic effects of climate change, or the application of AI to tackle climate change.

🌎 Can AI governance be harnessed to combat climate change? 🌍 "The creation of an International Scientific Panel on AI (ISP) and commitment to an annual dialogue on AI Governance at the UN: These initiatives hold potential for climate action if they are harnessed intentionally. For instance, an International Scientific Panel on AI could publish regular reports on the risks and opportunities of AI, which could include carbon and water footprints of large language models, for example, as well as use cases in energy optimization, agricultural efficiency and remote sensing of climate impacts. Another promising initiative would be the use of AI for predictive analytics in order to better prepare for storms and floods, which has been discussed following recent increases in climate-related disasters in the Caribbean and South Asia. The Scientific Panel could also become an authoritative voice in broadly assessing AI’s impact on emissions and its role in sustainability transformations, and recommend relevant policy options." 🌏 https://lnkd.in/e9aeYHBU
