🌍 This week, our CEO Sean Litton has been at the WeProtect Global Alliance Summit in Abu Dhabi. He joined leaders from governments, civil society, and safety technology to #FocusOnTheFuture of child safety online. We were honored to participate in two critical discussions: ➡️ Building the Case for Prevention Sean joined Marija Manojlovic (Safe Online), Deborah Denis (Lucy Faithfull Foundation), Aengus Ó Dochartaigh (MOORE | Preventing Child Sexual Abuse) and Nicolas Makharashvili (Safe Futures Hub) to share how the tech industry is driving innovative, proactive approaches to combat online child sexual exploitation and abuse. ➡️ Tackling the Rise of AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Material In this breakout session, Sean spoke alongside our member Chelsea Carlson from OpenAI, Denton Howard, CDir (INHOPE), Yalda Aoukar (Bracket Foundation), and Fallon McNulty (National Center for Missing & Exploited Children) on how technology is addressing this rapidly evolving challenge. The Summit reinforced the power of collaboration in building a safer digital world for children. We’re proud to work with stakeholders from across sectors, committed to tackling OCSEA through innovation, partnerships, and collective action. #WeProtectSummit #FocusOnTheFuture #ChildSafety #TechCoalition

We were honored to join partners at the "ASEAN ICT Forum on Child Online Protection 2024" last week to discuss and exchange ideas on creating safer online spaces for children. We emphasized the connections between violence against women (VAW) and violence against children (VAC), both online and offline. Despite often intersecting within the same families, policies typically address them separately. However, research shows that frontline workers, including crisis services, police, health professionals, and social workers, frequently respond to both issues in practice. We also discussed findings from the UN Multi-Country Study on Men and Violence, which surveyed over 10,000 men and 3,000 women across six countries in Asia-Pacific. The study revealed that half of the men who committed rape did so for the first time as teenagers, with 12% being under 15, often due to a sense of sexual entitlement. It also found that childhood experiences of violence and social norms around dominance strongly influence their use of violence against women. Understanding these intersections is key to developing holistic responses and solutions that address the root causes, challenge harmful gender norms, and create safer environments for women and children.

🚨 Important Announcement 🚨 We're excited to share that Dr Lara Christensen will be presenting at the 2024 International Conference on Preventing Sexual Exploitation of Children hosted by ECPAT Taiwan on November 26-27. 🌍 Lara’s session, titled "The Harm of Digitally Generated Child Sexual Abuse/Exploitation Materials", will explore the growing threat of virtual child sexual abuse material and how digital technology is amplifying exploitation, regardless of whether the children are real or not in the material. In a time when online safety is more crucial than ever, this conversation is vital. ECPAT’s global movement — with a network of 129 civil society organizations in 108 countries — continues to lead the charge in protecting children and ending exploitation worldwide. We’re proud to support this mission and look forward to Lara’s powerful insights at the conference. Let’s all work together to create a safer digital world for children 💡💻 #ECPAT2024 #DigitalSafety #ChildProtection #EndChildExploitation #GlobalImpact #SVRPU #UnderstandPreventRespond

Our young people are so much more vulnerable than we realise sometimes. It’s so easy to look at a young person and say ‘well they’re just naughty’, when in fact we have no idea what emotions they’re feeling under that hard ego or bravado. In order to help we need to be able to see and understand THEIR situation from THEIR own eyes. Only then can we understand the next steps to be taken to successfully break the cycle. #modernslavery #victims #livedexperience #countylines

Today is World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 💻, a date that invites us to reflect on the impact of the Internet and information and communication technologies (ICTs) on our societies and economies. This day seeks to highlight both the opportunities these technologies bring us and the challenges they pose, transforming communication and collaboration on a global level. 🔷 ICTs have driven many economic activities but have also facilitated online crimes, such as human trafficking and child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSA/CSE). Globally, the number of victims, especially children, continues to rise despite international efforts. In Europe, the majority of victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation are women and girls. 🔷 The HEROES Project is dedicated to developing technological, methodological, and strategic solutions to prevent, detect, and prosecute these crimes, offering support and protection to the victims. This project is structured around three main components: Prevention, Investigation, and Victim Assistance. In the area of Prevention, and from a social science and humanities (SSH) perspective, The partners from International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), Trilateral Research, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Centre for Women and Children Studies (CWCS), and Fundación Renacer have created a Manual for Early Identification of Potential Victims of Trafficking in Human Beings (THB), Child Sexual Abuse and Child Sexual Exploitation (CSA/E). This manual, to be published on May 27, 2024 📅 , is designed to help front-line responders identify and support potential victims of these crimes. It's intended for diverse professionals, such as law enforcement, NGOs, educators, and health professionals, providing tools for detection and referral to support services. The fight against these crimes is a shared responsibility, and with initiatives such as the HEROES Project, we are moving towards a safer and fairer world for all. Join us and let's make the world a safer place for children. 💙 💚 European Commission #HEROESFCT #H2020 #HEROES4All #ChildProtection

We must promote digital responsibility by fostering safe online environments to combat this pressing issue. This includes implementing robust legal frameworks, providing education on digital rights, and developing innovative digital interventions to combat GBV and ensure equality for all. #digitalhealthweek #safedigitalspaces
