Having been a local grocer for 15 years in the community of East San Jose, I have seen it all and have been in my fair share of beer runs and shoplifting fights. To the business owners who are working the front line of their own businesses, it's not worth it. You can do a million things for prevention, including setting up mirrors and cameras and having a presence with good employees, but if someone is intent on taking something, they will take it. I understand how much your business means to you and that it is the thing that puts food on the table for yourself and your family. But it means nothing when a potential shoplifter carries a dangerous weapon. Thank goodness nothing happened here. I once worked overnight to update our PoS lanes solo. At 2 a.m., these three or four teenagers with ski masks and gloves carefully removed the side door panels to avoid tripping the alarm. As the owner of my 'domain,' a 20,000 sqft operation, my instant reaction was to puff up my chest and walk straight at there, yelling, 'HEY - WE'RE CLOSED!' They took off running in a panic, shocked that anyone would be inside the building with all the lights off at such an ungodly hour. Watching the evening surveillance, I realized how upside-down that situation could have become. That instant reaction I felt that night was the same as these two ladies, and I commend them for being so strong and offer my deep relief that they were not seriously injured. To the thieves hoping to walk out with some drinks for a quick buzz, you need to reassess your life. Our society is far from perfect in addressing the needs of the marginalized, but that does not mean help is not there. Reach out and get help, and work with our available institutions instead of against them. And respect your community leaders, including business owners. They are there for themselves but often contribute to the community in ways most of us cannot see. As an example, our market participated in several local food security programs and provided over $1000 in free produce every week over the course of a two-year pilot program with the County. I also engaged heavily with our local neighborhood, hiring directly from the neighborhood and focussing on minorities new to the US but simultaneously enrolled in ESL or entry-level college courses. When I visit my old market, I can no longer recognize it because of its rebranding and re-alignment to a new target audience. But the soul of the community is still there and is a place from which I often reflect on life. Only Good Things, Charlie

The state benefits from oil revenues, which help support public services. Florida Income Tax: No state income tax. Sales Tax: The state has a sales tax rate of 6%, with additional local sales taxes that can add up to 2.5% more in some areas. Other Taxes: Property taxes and various business taxes apply. The state relies heavily on tourism and real estate for revenue. Nevada Income Tax: No state income tax. Sales Tax: The state sales tax rate is 6.85%, with local taxes adding up to 1.53% more, making the total rate up to 8.38%. Other Taxes: Revenue primarily comes from gaming and tourism taxes. How Does Washington Tech Community Feel About the Capital Gains Income Tax? Vijay Boyapati asked Microsoft and Amazon workers - Washington state has one of the most vibrant tech communities in the world, but it's under threat from the new anti-tech, anti-innovation, capital gains tax, passed in 2021. I was curious how tech workers felt about this tax so I visited Microsoft and Amazon (see video below). What I learned shocked me. Many employees of these companies (who receive a large portion of them compensation in the form of stock) were not even aware that Washington's legislature had passed a capital gains tax that would affect them. This was not by accident. Politicians in Olympia designed the tax to initially apply to a fairly small set of people (the threshold at which it applies is $250,000). For years they had attempted to create a widespread income tax in WA by initiative, but they were repeatedly voted down by Washingtonians. But once they found a way to open the door to this new capital gains tax (by absurdly claiming it's not an income tax, but an excise tax), they immediately set to work on making it more widespread. Bill 5335 has been introduced to modify the capital gains tax so that the threshold at which applies will drop to $15,000 (a 94% drop, massively expanding the net of people it applies to), while increasing the rate from 7% to 8.5%. The increase in rate would mean that Washingtonians would see a greater than 50% increase in their tax burden on capital gains (sale of stocks, bonds, cryptocurrencies and other assets such as small businesses). When I explained these facts to the tech employees I met at Microsoft and Amazon most of them supported a repeal of the capital gains tax. We have one chance to get Washington back to its long tradition of not punishing success and welcoming the world's best and brightest to our state. Quitting is not failing. I write this post in case someone else needs to hear it today, or any other day in the future. 3 minutes ago, I “dropped” my JavaScript course from San Jose City College that I had been so excited to get into. Why? I went to the orientation with Sanjay Dorairaj and was beyond thrilled to be taught by someone in industry. (Sanjay both works in tech, and teaches - 😳). At the same time, I was terrified because Sanjay recommended 2 hrs/day (10/week) to complete the coursework. At this point in my life, it is not time that I have. I recognize this today as I type this at 2 am having completed none of the Javascript homework. One day, I will take this course again - either with Sanjay - or using a self-paced version through Coursera or other mooc (massively open online course). Now, my life is filled with my new job, my 7 year old, and general life stuff. To the students out there, young and old, quitting doesn’t mean forever. It just means - for now. And - it doesn’t mean failing. Much love to you, and your learning journey, Julia ps. I spent 56 minutes this weekend replacing a dryer belt. While on the surface, this may not be as valuable to employers as JavaScript, I think I learned a lot. It taught me critical thinking, ability to follow instructions, and resilience (because my dryer still squeaks, so my next task will be to replace the idler pulley. If that doesn’t work - the rollers. Wish me luck!). Plus, it may save me the expense of a new dryer and help me fix many future dryers in my life. So, a decent ROI for 56 minutes. A picture, below, of my disassembled dryer with the drum and belt readily visible. It was fun. Even if it didn’t fix the horrific squeaks. ;)
