Madagascar Protected Areas and Biodiversity Fund’s Post

𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗮: 𝗜𝗡𝗕𝗢 𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝗣𝗕𝗘𝗦-𝟭𝟭 While the sun sets on the Namibian savanna, I'm locked into a brightly lit airco room with INBO colleagues Anna Heck and Hilde Eggermont. With Bart Rymen from BELSPO and Catherine Debruyne from SPW, we're representing Belgium at the 11th IPBES plenary, also the first one on African soil. Together with delegates from 147 governments and indigenous peoples, we will work seven days (and nights :-) to refine the IPBES documents word by word. The goal is to adopt these as formal policy texts which help reverse the global destruction of nature. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:  🔗 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘂𝘀 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 examines the complex links between biodiversity, water, food, health, and climate change, providing crucial insights for sustainable governance. In short, "What should we do?" ✊ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 highlights the root causes of biodiversity lossbut also the ineffectiveness of current policies, and the systemic changes needed to tackle them. 🌿Since 2019, #Malaysia has been at the forefront of ecological conservation with the Ecological Fiscal Transfer (#EFT), supported by UNDP BIOFIN. With an allocation of US$160 million, the country has designated 360,000 hectares as new protected areas, including 90,000 hectares of land and over 250,000 hectares of marine protected areas. Here is some taster from the article: “Biodiversity governance, such as safeguarding protected natural areas or strengthening ecosystems and biodiversity, is key for reaching the EU’s “30x30” target as set out in its Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. However, biodiversity governance also brings conflicts as it violates some political and economic interests, as exemplified by the controversy surrounding the Nature Restoration Law. One of the many things I appreciate about working with the Sustainable Finance Coalition is the engagement and collaboration with a Finance for Nature Ecosystem of innovators, leaders and knowledge holders. The event organised tomorrow at #COP16Colombia will showcase a handful of these engagements and connections, all linked to the Coalition's 3-part Finance Model. 1️⃣ 🐠 FIND finance solutions for specific contexts (WILDTRUST OFFICIAL for Marine Protected Areas) 2️⃣ 🐝 DESIGN finance solutions through incubating and implementing tailor-made solutions (e.g. with AB Entheos Ltd. on Insurance that promotes coexistence with nature and Forested with a unique #BeeBond) 3️⃣ 🌍 MOBILISE the capacity and finance required to replicate solutions at scale and learn from others working in the space (Legacy Landscapes Fund and Wilderlands) This is collective action in practice and the session showcasing African innovation will be one that is not to be missed! Today we celebrate #BiodiversityDay 🌱 MERLIN is bringing Europe's freshwater back to life while upscaling the implementation of Nature-based Solutions across Europe. This is an example of our case study in the Deba River in Spain, where the restoration of river morphology and connectivity is happening 🐟 River restoration is based on the removal of barriers. 10 obstacles located in the main river channel will be removed, recovering freshwater species and habitats and providing benefits for nature. The recent #GlobalBiodiversityFramework calls for the mobilization of 200 billion USD per year by 2030. To shoulder this ambitious target, public and private actors must work side by side - ensuring that the funds reach the most effective projects, especially in developing countries. As a service provider in #InternationalCooperation in more than 120 countries, we advance #biodiversity conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources. With our partners, we work on frameworks and mechanisms that increase the financial flow towards biodiversity targets. What are the various modalities for mobilizing finance? And what else needs to be done to bridge the biodiversity funding gap? It's always a source of pride to reflect on the significant steps we have taken together with the EMBRC community to support and improve marine research across Europe. CCMAR was involved in one of EMBRC's key activities in 2023, actively contributing to the 4 additional research services offered in our extensive catalogue. These are: 1️⃣ Identification and quantification of microplastics in marine samples using Pyrolysis, Liquid Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry (Py-LC-MS) 2️⃣ 3D Multimodal Atlas: developing a service to create comprehensive 3D multimodal imaging atlases of marine organisms. 3️⃣ MacroSea-MicroB: establishing protocols for biobanking seaweed-associated microbiomes. 4️⃣ SeaCLEAN: developing pollution monitoring and environmental chemistry services. #CCMARservices #EMBRC
